Dobyns Champ 744xp

Featured Replies

So the Black Friday Blitz is on … not really hunting for another rod right now but eying the 744 xp jig special .. looking at the Dx 745 as well but really the 744xp. Would be using in open to light cover. So u Dobyns guys.. your take on this rod? 3/8 to 1/2 oz jigs plus trailer. My lineup is 99% Dobyns and more than likely staying that way .

I have both models.  The 744 is noticeably faster and locks up quicker.  The sweet spot for both is 1/2 ounce. Both are rock solid in heavier cover. The Xtreme can do a few more things well due to more flex before lock up.

Yeah, this is generally my understanding as the differences as well, although I do not have any experience with a 745C.

The 744C is probably 80/20 or slightly less and the tip is fairly stiff. It's a solid choice for 3/8oz or 1/2oz jigs and will have no problem with lighter cover. Some people throw 3/4oz football jigs on it, and while I haven't tried it it doesn't seem too unreasonable considering how well it handles 1/2oz jigs.

I too have both rods & agree with what Columbia Craw Said. I feel that the Xtreme series is more sensitive than the XP series. I also like the more power of the 745 in heavy cover.  I fish Santee Cooper So I due use the 745 more because of the heavy cover. I do have 4 of the XP 744 & 2 of the Xtreme 745. These are both excellent rods, you can't go wrong with either one.  In your case using the rod in open to light cover I would probley go with the XP because I could spend the difference on some good line. I hope this helps some.

Well looks like the 744 xp as the wife needs to be more sneeky lol. Like don’t leave certain things open on the computer in my office ?.. I’ll act surprised.
