Never towed a boat with a vechile so I can't help there.  You might want to look into a pickup truck or SUV.

I was in the same situation when we went looking for a vehical for my wife/family. I have a Silverado that I use whenever I go out without the family. We looked at larger cars, but couldn't find anything we were thrilled with. We ended up purchasing a Tahoe and what a great decision this was. Now if we go somewhere as a family we can always take the boat along.

Good Fishing  8-)

How big of a boat are you towing? Where will you do most of your towing ie. mountains or flat roads? What do you mean by family friendly? DVD players etc. I'm guessing. How many and how big are the kids? Will you need the pickup bed? I think most manufactures sell "family friendly" trucks. If your kids are a little older make sure there is enough room in the back seat. Even though the truck has 4 doors, doesn't mean the back seat is comfortable. As far as towing a boat I prefer a pickup for the simple fact that all ramps are not created equal. At some ramps I have to hop in the bed and then onto the trailer to hook the boat back up to avoid getting my feet wet. I have an '08 Tundra 5.7 liter 6speed trans. My boat, trailer and gear is about 4000lbs. The truck tows like the boat isn't even there. I don't lose power in the mountains or with the a/c on. 19mpg(no boat) 12mpg(with boat).

I've owned Ford, and Dodge trucks and driven Chevys for work. I will NEVER own another Dodge truck. When I purchased my truck it was between the Tundra and the F150. Tundra was less expensive with similar options and more power.

i had to get a bigger car with a baby on the way. i picked up an expedition with the heavy duty tow package, it tows 9k.

I bought a new '99 4runner (4wd sr5) and it was the primary tow vehicle for my Ranger for a good portion of its life.

It now has well over 200,000+ miles on the odometer and has become my youngest son's daily driver (he'll take it to college next year)

I also have a truck these days but if I were looking for a once-size-fits-all vehicle I'd personally buy another 4runner in a heartbeat. It has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. YMMV ;)

I'm on my second 4 runner (4wd-8cyl) used as my tow vehicle/primary transporter for a 18' lund & my new 20' starcraft. Goes to Canada at least once a year. Both have been trouble free.

After my second child was born i had to get something bigger to tow with as well. I got an 07 Silverado 4 door LT and it is perfect. I can pull the kids, wife, groceries and an 18' 6" bass boat around like nothing!   ;D

We htow with both a Tahoe and a Silverado Crewcab. We have a heavy boat (21 ft Ranger) and both do a good job towing and hauling people. The Silverado is however somewhat better.

I have a 96 jeep cherokee with the 4.0 in it although it pulled my old boat a 350-v ranger ok, at some of the launche's I wished I had a warn winch to keep the boat from pulling me into the water! That's why I bought a smaller boat, 89 bass tracker tournament 17. Junebugman

I have a cargo van but, I bought my wife a Dodge Durango and we both love it. I got the one that has the 5.9L 360 motor and I can pull my 20' boat up a mountain and not know I'm pulling it.  ;D It's loaded with the 3rd row seat and it has leather interior so when my kids drop a juice box I'm not freaking out about it and it staining, it just wipes up.

I tow my 20' Javelin with an '07 Silverado Crew. I love that truck. Although Silverado or Avalanche will work just fine, be open minded and shop around. You'll save a ton of cash if you can find something one or two years old with low mileage. They're out there.
