Gear ratio for a bank angler - squarebill/lipless/etc combo

Featured Replies

I’m a bank angler looking to dedicate a baitcaster combo to squarebills/lipless/medium divers (maybe 6-8ft or so). I’ve got a variety of reels at my disposal (low 6, high 6, 7s, and 8s) so what gear ratio would you choose if you were throwing one around?

Using Daiwa reels in 6:3:1

You can always go slower comfortably, but never faster.

A 6.something or 7 will work fine. Here's a crazy idea, try them all and see which one YOU like best...

It's all in the hips...

There’s no undeniable advantage to any of those in this scenario. For lack of anything better, I’d start with one of the 6.x:1 and see if I liked it.

I only use 7 or higher speeds other than my dedicated deep crank rod. I’ve bank fished a ton and still do when the itch strikes. My “zoned out” reeling speed is super slow so faster reels help me not just drag weeds out of the mud.

Cranking from the bank is hard unless you have chunk rock or bare sand as the bottom. The crank dives against the rise in bank and I’ve never felt good throwing even shallow divers. I stick to topwater or mid column single hook baits from the bank.

For lipless fishing I use a 7.2:1. Typically working in a slightly more brisk retrieve and if I'm ripping/yoyoing/jigging then I still want to pick up slack quickly.

I'm in the same boat, wait, the same bank as you. Ive gotten to really like my mid 6. Reels for lipless and such. I can speed them up if need be but i dont over power the lures accidently when im just zoned out reeling.
