School Me On Lipless

Featured Replies

I fish a very OVER FISHED area with a bunch of retired Geezers EVERY good day. May 15 to Sept. 15.

Most / all ?  are C & R  with the fish. SO the fish have over many years become VERY good at not biting stupidly. They do very light cautious nips on any lure.

I have to figure out ways to fool them. NOT EASY with their lateral lines & excellent eyesight in 6 to 10' of clear water.

I do fish Traps deep but my preference is shallower wood. I pretty much throw a Trap like I would a spinnerbait.

I have caught a lot of fish & big fish in 2-3' of water on a Trap. Throw a 1/4 oz Trap, hold your rod tip at about 11 °clock, & burn it.

1.  What combo do you prefer to throw a lipless on?

2.  What are your go to lipless baits?

3.  How do you fish them?  Are you a burner?  A bottom hopper?  A grass ripper?

4.  Any special secrets you’re willing to share?

1. Dobyns Fury 705CB, Shimano SLX DC 151HG, 30lb braid to 15lb mono leader.

2. Strike King Red-Eyed Shad, Rattlin' Rapala, Booyah One Knocker, Thunderhawk Sergeant, Berkley Warpig are the ones I throw the most often. I keep colors relatively simple: Shad pattern, bluegill pattern, gold, red.

3. Typically either an aggressive yo yo retrieve, or a steady retrieve interspersed with pops and pauses. I mix it up from there depending on what the bite is like, from jigging it slowly off the bottom, to straight burning it if need be.

4. Pay attention to the sound profile. Some will be very subdued and some will be obnoxiously loud; I usually switch to quieter or silent ones if the bite is tough, and louder ones when they are fired up.
