What is the difference between this and a T-rig? Is it because there's no stopper, or this type of weight slides easier?

Yup, this is what I've been saying all along. See how he dropped the tip of his rod an instant before setting the hook?  "Cracking the whip" is what I call it - putting a small amount of slack in the line and then slamming it home!

 

And so many people dog me for not doing a tight-line hookset like Hackney.  I'm not saying one is better than the other, but Shin has the "slack line" hookset down to a science and demonstrates why it works so well.  That's exactly how you do it.
