Line capacity/dumb question

Featured Replies

Silly question…are there standard line diameters that reel manufacturers use when they list line capacity for reels?

Nope ~ It's a Total Krap Shoot.

I got tired of trying to figure out what type of totally inconsistent wizardry they used.

So now I fill just about every reel I have with 1/3 third spool mono backing

and top the rest of it off with whatever my mainline of choice for that reel may be;

FC / Braid.

Don't really need mono backing for a mono reel.

That’s pretty much what I’m hearing everywhere….trying to decide/figure out if I can get enough 20lb Tatsu on my Metanium MG***or it to work well…not a ton of line capacity on the Metanium, but Tatsu is pretty thin compared to other lines (or so I’m told)

The system that makes sense is Japan.

Everything is sized by traditional silk thread sizes (diameter) - braid, mono, fluoro.

The rest of the world also uses diameter for reel capacities.  Only the US has established pound-test-capacity as a dart board.

Japan uses the # symbol to represent their traditional symbol  mmNZyq7.jpg

I fish 20 lb Tatsu south of the border  -  hard.

Great line IMO.

As for the diameter vs other FC and Mono at the same test,

it's a 'little thinner' but not enough to make a small capacity reel seem over sized.

I'd say, if you need 20 FC and you're not bombing casts, this is a good choice for that reel.

If you Need 20 FC and plan on putting baits into orbit,

I'd consider a bigger reel or perhaps go to a braid.

Good Luck

Yeah, may step down to 15 or 17….or braid like you said! Either way I have an excuse to buy another reel!

Howdy Howdy,

Have to love those tiny little, super expensive bait casters that hold such a small amount of line :)

Power-Pro Maxcuatro is 25% smaller that regular braid. It cost s few dollars more, but well worth it for the smaller reels. The only drawback is that there is yellow and moss green, no other colors at the moment that I can find.

What I’m doing now is filling up the spool with cheap mono of a known diameter. Then use Patty’s line calculator to figure out how much I’d need to strip off to replace with main line of choice that has a different diameter. When I need to replace main line I just strip to the connection knot and respool. This works as long as you’re close with main line diameters.

Most of Japanese reel would use line diameter standard for Japan market (not fault advertising US line). If you plan to use Tatsu, you should expect the same line capacity as stated (METANIUM US model ~ 10/120 12/110). For 15lb line you should be able to get almost 100 yards or 20 around 70-80yards.
