New deep cranking/lipless rod

Featured Replies

In the mail today came my new deep cranking/lipless blank from LPO.  It is a 7ft8 American tackle Bushido blank.  Along, with an American tackle comfort reel sheet. For guides I purchased a CRB performance casting guide set. I may do the threads.  From mud hole I have a 12 inch EVa foam handle kit coming along with a tip top.

I think for wrapping thread I may do red.  I’m not sure about the high lights.  I may try doing more advanced wraps on this one

..but totally usable like that.

I like the Bushido blanks...I just got some CB 72/8-15...next build.

Ha I guess it is.  Lure parts didn’t really say what it was in the description.  I’ll probably still use it

If I were building the rod as a baitcasting rod I would use a trigger seat as Chris suggested.  Ergonomically better for the casting process with baitcasters, in my opinion.  Makes the rod more stable in the hand.  With spin the hand wraps around the rod and captures the reel stem, not so on baitcasters, so the trigger sort of locks the rod into the hand.

Look at Fuji ECSM exposed blank reel seats.  They need to be sized to fit the blank and come in 1/2 mm increment sizes.  Measure the blank OD where you want the reel seat to be to get the correct size.

So I would like to add this winding check to my rod.  The dia. Of where it is going is .496 inches.   They have a bunch of different sizes moving up in .001 increments.  Should I purchase the exact size or get the ID bigger.  How much bigger should I go? Like .005 inches bigger?

I’m sure that there is some sort of print tolerance built into the ID of the winding check.  I just don’t want the ID to be on the smaller side and than not fit.

You want the rigid checks to be larger than the diameter of the rod at the point they are installed.  That is because the rod goes oval when stressed.  Not much down in the griip area, but some.

How much larger?  It is somewhat a guessing game unless you have the blank dimension when ordering the parts, but it's better to err on the large side than to err on the small side.  If the one you get is too large you can wrap some thread under it to maintain concentricity and when epoxy is applied  the gap will not show.

Maybe another builder can help here, but I would say go about .010 larger than the expected diameter.

I use mostly the flexible  rubber/vinyl checks, so don't have this issue.  I like the "black line" appearance of them (when I use them, I don't always), totally encapsulating them with a nice filet of epoxy.  I think the aluminum checks generally, especially on split grips where one may have two or three of them, look gaudy and phony.  Like too much makeup on a woman.

I would just go bigger...by the smallest amount you can.

I've thought about using an aero seat like that for a jerkbait rod before. Got tired of the trigger digging at my hand while working the bait and thought about doing exactly what you have in the picture. It fit well enough just never built it.

The deep cranking rod is done!!!! Probably the best full build.  Almost zero fuzzies.  Added some bling to the for grip that I think looks nice.  Tried an over wrap on the hook keeper and 1st double footed guide.  Overall I am happy.

thank you Chris Catignani for the reel seat and the magazine.

my Swedish made 5500cs abu rocket looks good on it.  Just need some 15lbs flouro and be ready to rock
