For fishermen in the East Tennessee area, I need some help.

Featured Replies

My younger brother has bone cancer that invaded his back and probably other places. He has at least 2 broken vertabrae, likely due to the cancer. He has gone through chemo and radiation. I think the cancer is in remission now, but my thought is that eventually it will be terminal. He hasn't fished in years, but when he was in bad shape a few months ago I told him that when he got better we should go fishing. So now he has gotten better and wants to go fishing.

I don't have a boat and am land based. I offered to rent a boat, but he doesn't think he could get in and out. He can walk some, but not a lot. Inclines and stairs are not possible. He will have to use a chair to sit in while he fishes. So, here is what I need help with. I need ideas about a place I can take him to fish where it will not be too hard for him to walk to the shore, bank or pier and are suitable for him to set up a chair and fish from the chair. It would be great to go somewhere where he could catch a fish, but I think he would just have fun fishing anyway.

We live on opposite ends of Knox County, so several lakes are possibilities. Ideas?

Hmmm, I think there’s a few places in the Farragut/Lenoir city area you could fish. I think the piers along northshore drive or maybe even the old bridge across the mouth of turkey creek if you like vertical fishing (or night fishing). Above and below dams can have decent access but you’ve got to scramble on rocks sometimes. There is some decent access on topside road in little river and George’s creek, especially for crappie.  Over toward melton hill might be pretty good this time of year, could see some large fishing cruising the shallows in the clear water.

Thank you. I will check those out.

I used to drive past Melton Hill on Edgemoor for work.

the park there has a fishing pier that extends out into the water.

Several other areas to access from shore as well.

The google car drove thru the parking lot so you can see parking and access points

Thank you!

If you wanted to make a trip out of it, there is a decent city park in Bristol. Steele Creek Lake. There is a long boardwalk with a covered fishing pier too. It’s a little bit of a walk but it’s pretty much all paved. Largemouth, smallmouth, crappie and catfish all call it home. It does get a lot of pressure but it’s a nice lil lake.
