Phenix Feather or m1 a good buy?

Featured Replies

So I was in my local shop today and these rods caught my eyes.I like the look and feel but I dont know much about phenix.I know they have a good reputation but how are these rods? Any issues or things to know.Id get one for mainly bottom contact stuff.

I'm curious too. The Feather FTX spinning rods caught my eye too because of the unique grip. Bought one, but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Wish I could add something of significant value to this thread.  Both models are rods I'd like to try.  People on here that have actually fished with the Feather seem to like it a lot.  The new M1 got an "Editor's Choice Award' on TT.  Apparently it is a nice improvement over the original model.

I have the L and ML Feather. I like em alot for neds, grubs, small swimmers etc. Very nice rods. Plenty sensitive for bottom contact. Zero issues so far. Just started fishing them in March, but the ML gets lots of use.

I can recommend both, I own both Feather and M1 Vortex. The Feather though is slightly lighter and both are just as sensitive. For bottom contact the M1 Vortex is a bit more sensitive IMO, since the butt end has no EVA grip.

A couple local shops in SoCal had a fishing sale and Phenix rods were 20% off, so I got one of each of the Feather and M1 Vortex in 7'1" Heavy casting for general applications. I also have the 7'1" Light casting rod for my BFS rod.

People say they run light is this true? The heavy would be what I get since im looking for a mh rod.I have experience with loomis gcx st croix and dobyns medium heavys if that help with a comparison.

I have a feather casting rod.  I love the action.  I paired it with a Shimano Curado 200 and it all casts further than I think it should.  I pretty much wing swimbaits towards the horizon with it. I just use it mostly and not think about it’s designed use. I’ll live.

full disclosure.  It had the oddest handle for me to get used to. It tapers sharply and felt weird for a long time.  It was also the most difficult for me to calibrate my brain and arm to cast accurately.  We have since come to an understanding and I hauled in a very good bass with it.

I have a L and ML Feather casting rods. Both are killer rods. I use them both with 8lb FC and have caught bass up to 6.5lbs with them, and lots of 3+ fish. I use them for Neds, smallish cranks, and 1/8oz tubes. The ML is nice with a 3/16oz bitsy bug jig. They are really fun rods to fish with.

What power do you use?

Hi, I don't own either rods so I can't compare to either. I can tell you that the Feather Heavy and M1 Vortex is on the heavy action side for me. The action does over power some applications like using crankbaits or treble hook lures. Not much give but I can deal with that. I just loosen my drag to compensate for the rods stiffness. Both are perfect for jigs and frogs. If you have a chance to handle either rod at a store, I'd recommend that.

I was talking about my 7-1 heavy.  I have the light as well with my curado bfs, but I don’t fish it much. Not enough to review it yet.

The heavy is what Im looking to get since I e heard people say they run light. How do the heavy compare to any mh you have used for references, dont want a broom stick when most of what I would throw would be under a ounce probably lightest is 3/8ths

The MH felt lighter in action to me. I actually had the M1 Vortex in MH, but I settled for the Heavy.
