Carolina rig line debate

Featured Replies

Stuck in the middle of only using 1 mainline for carolina rigs. Braid or fluorocarbon, for all types of bottom. (THICK grass, timber, rock ledges)

If only one mainline, what would it be?

I use #20 fluorocarbon & #50 braid. You pick

50 lb braid mainline with flourocarbon leader

Line that sinks is a poor choice for C-rigs.

FC sinks and has poor knot, impact and abrasion strength.

Braid floats, cuts through vegetation but....has poor abrasion resistance.

Line of choice is premium mono or Copolymer.

Sunline Defier Armillo is a good choice, doesn’t sink, smaller diameter, exceptional knot, impact, casting and abrasion resistance.

19 lb test Armillo is .014D, 22 lb test .015D, 25 lb is .016D.

Ditto

Have never had a problem with this combination.

The last few times I threw a c-rig it was with a Carolina Keeper on 20 lb Shooter and it worked just fine.

It's the only applicaiton that I use mono for these days (braid main line - mono leader)... To me, a c-rig is a finesse tactic that I use bigger plastics on, and the floating properties of mono between the weight and the bait is what fits that bill for me.

Yup, also the reason lizards are so much better than skinny worms.

Defier Armillo is a remarkable line for many bass applications . Ideally having the #19 lb. Armillo main line  - then use #13 lb. Armillo as the C-Rig leader could be a potent set up .

Be sure to use plastics that float. Especially if you're in silty, muddy areas or around sand grass, the sinker stirs things up and it helps if the bait rises up to be seen:

  • Big Bite Baits Flying Squirrel
  • Grandebass Airtail Rattler or Neko stick bait
  • Netbait T-Mac worm (instead of Trick Worm which doesn't float as well)
  • Biwaa Armored Craw
  • Savage Gear 4D Craw

And any of the zman baits with elaztech

They all float if you thread one of those disposable hearing protection foamie things on the leader. Surf fishermen, European carp anglers and catfish drifters do something similar

But then you can’t hear the fish swim by... ?
