I actually have the 101B....

 

I noticed yesterday that, at times, when I would make a cast...It seemed that the centrifugal force was actually turning on brakes that were originally off.

I was looking at the brake collars and they appear to be OK.

It almost looks like the (black ring that hold the brakes) collar housing has worn tabs for the off position.

Really just curious if this is a known issue with this real of not...

I've had it awhile and have put some miles on it...actually got two.

I’ve seen tabs lost or broken and the spindle come loose from the spool but never seen wear on the tabs. 

I did do some more controlled testing...and sure enough some of the break collars were setting on when casting.

OK....got a new set of brake collars and problem fixed! $4.95 off eBay.

Interesting. I’ll make note.  Glad you got it worked out. Those reels can last two lifetimes.

That seller is a gold mine for vintage parts. I've patched up a bunch of reels from the 70s and early 80s with parts I've gotten from them.

I replaced the bearings on em last year.

New carbon 101 mm handles.

....and I have some carbon drag washers for em on the way.

Totally different reel.

Yes I’ve used JDL several times. They’re very good seller’s.
