JDM Zillion SV vs JDM Metanium

Featured Replies

Could get either one from Digitaka for around 230. Gonna be paired with a 7’2” MHF Expride B for mainly t-rigs and jigs but will see all round use as well. What do y’all think of these 2 reels? And would the aluminum gears in the Zillion hold up as well as the brass gears in the Met? Thank you

Dont have the Zillion, but the Met is an awesome reel.  If your going with the 100G or 100HG the handle is short and the knobs smaller the Usdm.  Not an issue for moving baits but def makes a diff trying to catch up to a fish.

I switched from Bantam to Zillion and been very happy. Only one regret is I should have get the right hand instead of lefties. The Zillion is a tad wider and sit taller on reel seat so it is not as comfortable as bantam/Met.

Metanium I was considered this reel before Zillion. If you like pure distance and smaller reel Metanium is the way to go. If you like to tinker with your reel and want more control Zillion all the way. To me Zillion win hand down in control and smoothness over Shimano.

So far I got 3 spools for Zillion, stock spool with 15lb FC, Ray’s shallow for 15lb braid, Amo  long cast spool for 10lb Copolymer. It is pretty cheap to get different spool for Zillion make it more versatile than Met.33C2E0C2-57BF-4C47-9634-CE988669EFB5.thumb.jpeg.562088b1b48f036a7b3d12ff948338cd.jpeg

Besides form factor, I don't feel the Met B is much more capable than the Chronarch MGL. A shade better on lighter baits. Not a revelation performance-wise, but it's beautifully built, quite small, and light. If you're happy using SVS Infinity braking and MGL spools, you'll be happy with the Met.

The Zillion G is a super Daiwa though. If you're happy fishing with Mag Z Tatulas, you'll be extremely happy fishing with the G and its SV boost braking. It's special, and the entire reel is ultra smooth.

Both are luxury items, but neither reel will change your life. You can't go wrong with whichever one you choose. It simply comes down to which system you prefer fishing with. They're different.

Yeah I currently have a Chronarch MGL on the rod and love it. was looking to try one of those 2 reels because of how “cheap” they are from Japan. Still, 230 bucks is a lot of dough and I’m rethinking it now that you say the Met isn’t too much better. Might still get the Zillion though. It’s always intrigued me and looks really cool lol

If you can swing it, do it. It's something else.

Just ordered it ? thanks for your help

I have two of both JDM versions. Neither is better than the other.

Both are excellent reels without any bad points for me.

I prefer the Zillion for skipping.

I have two of the Zillion "g"s and I just got a 22 Zillion 1000 HD. I have both Bantams and Metanium's.

All of them are great reels. Both the Bantam and the Met's I've had longer. I've have been a Shimano fan boy for many years.  But the Zillion G and the new 22 Zillion 1000 HD are very sweet too. Now I am really liking both the Diawa and Shimano reels I have. Almost all of them have been JDM. I got two of the Bantams a few years back when ALF had a combo sale. Bantam and a Gloomis IMX pro for 350.

What are the casting differences like between the G and the HD? I'm considering an HD for a new frog reel, but it would see some jig duties as well.... Possibly some skipping.

Hi Ammo,

I really don't have enough "stick" time in on the Zillion HD to give you a good answer. Both the G and the HD are incredibly smooth and sweet reels both casting and retrieving. I got the HD about two weeks ago and fished it for the first time last weekend. I was prefishing for a tournament Friday and fished the tournament Saturday.  I was switching rigs quite a bit and it will take more time to get a really good assessment of the HD.  But first impression is like "Oh yaaah wow, this is sweet".  I've never fished a Diawa Steez or a Shimano Antares. But I really don't see how it can get much better then what I'm using now on both sides of the fence Diawa's Zillion's or Shimano's Met's and Bantam's.

Zillion just came in and I’m speechless. The thing is beautiful, smooth, and super light. Smoothness on par with my Chronarch MGLs but with an even higher end feel. I think having an aluminum frame vs a composite one accounts for that. I’d say overall it’s a touch nicer than my Chronarchs, but for a bit cheaper ordering from Japan. Can’t wait to use it
