Most docks here are built over shallow water with 8-10' being average. The lakes fluctuations around 4-6' is extreme & wave action 2-4'.

 

One also has to consider what body of water we're talking about.

Ya I'm sure down south your talking about the big fluctuating reservoirs/river systems.  Up here I'm talking about lakes.  Their levels do not fluctuate like that.

I’ve had many of bad dude bass shoot out from floating docks like a rocket to hammer a spinnerbait a burnin by the corners of the docks
