NRX 852s Jwr vs NRX 872s jwr for bank fishing smallmouth?

Featured Replies

Would you recommend the 852s jwr or the 872s jwr for bank fishing smallmouth (using small 1/8oz jigs, grubs, tubes etc.)

My main concern is I hear that the 852 has some trouble casting far distances which is a bigger deal when I’m not in a boat and I fish primarily from a bank.

Advice is very much appreciated, fish on ??

one option might be to jump up to the longer versions. I have the 892S JWR (but in 2018 E6X version) and it can really launch baits. the 7'6 length is awesome.

Thank you

I have both and fish from the bank a decent amount the 852S is my favorite of the 2 but admit the 872S casts a little bit further for me.  If I'm not mistaken the 872S supposedly was designed for the techniques you mentioned you want to use it for.

Admittedly I have not tried the 872 but I do have the 852 NRX plus and it is no slouch in the casting dept. Casting distance isn’t the main priority for me in a rod but the 852 cast as long as I want or need. Doubtful you’d be disappointed with either. I am hoping to have both semi-soon.

If you are hesitant because you're not used to the longer length, don't.  You'll get used to it during your first outing.  I went from a 7' spinning rod to a 7'9 and had no issues and LOVED the extra length.  Not only is it good for extra distance on the cast but it helps when ***.  I caught several stray trout and carp with my 7'9 mL rod and the extra length gave me more leverage.  Now if you're wondering because of branches or things like that, I can't help you there.   Good luck.

Would you say they are about as sensitive?

Would you say the sensitivity is the same or almost?

I don’t think you’ll get more sensitive than the NRX+ especially the JWR. I am sure other have their favorites but NRX + is super sensitive. It’s a great rod. Crazy light. Mine is paired with a ‘19 Certate and is about perfect. For me spinning tackle is mostly, Senkos, wacky rigs, ball head swim baits, Ned’s, flukes. Both the 852 or 872 would be great at those. If you fishing deeper water the length of the 872 may be an advantage. My ponds rarely get deeper than 10-15 feet.  None of my fishing is in 40 feet of water. All that factors in. Are both rods in stock now? Just an fyi… I have had good luck asking about a discount on the NRX rods. Shops seems to be willing to knock 15-20% off pretty quick.

Sensitivity is the same to me between them I can feel what I need to feel with them both equally.  852S is just my favorite I love throwing a wacky rig and light Texas rigged baits with that rod for largemouth.  I mostly use the 872S when I'm fishing deeper and for spots here in the south.

Thanks brotha

I’ve owned both. If you do underhanded or sidearm casting you may want the 852, if not the why not go 872? The extra length will help you get a little more distance on casts. Sensitivity is the same on both.

Where or what websites did you use to get the 20% off? Been in the market for one and wanted to know where you purchased yours with the discount.  Thank you
