I was breaking down the reel for maintenance and was wondering how tight the brass nut should be when you reinstall it? I realize there is a plastic retainer that goes over it, so it needs to be at a certain angle for the retainer to seat on the nut. Should the brass nut be tight as possible or just hand tight? Thanks 

i usually hand tighten as tight as i can go and then tighten as little as necessary until the retainer can be installed

Thanks very much. I was confused because when I removed the nut for the first time, it was very tightly fastened, so that made me believe it is supposed to be reinstalled pretty tight 

Snug is all you need. Brass is easily stripped and like you said there’s a retainer.
