Just Ordered Daiwa Tatula SV 70...Questions

Featured Replies

I ordered the 7.1:1 gear ratio for an all around reel. I do have some questions about this reel.

1. Zero adjuster knob for spool tension. Am I able to turn the knob to adjust for lure weight, or should I leave it at factory setting?

2. I mostly use braid, Power Pro braid. Should I spool with with 20 or 30 lb braid? I will have backing first.

3. Which action for a casting rod should I use? Medium or medium heavy power?

4. Any idea what lure weights I can cast? from 1/8 oz to 5/8oz? Or what weight range are you using your SV 70?

1. It can move but it’s zero adjust because it’s factory set and meant to be adjusted zero amount. I don’t mess with mine. Plus you don’t adjust daiwas to lure weight like shimanos anyway.

2. Whatever you prefer.

3. That depends on what lures you want to use and isn’t reel specific.

4. It’ll cast any of those weights depending on rod.

Don't do it! The whole reel will explode into pieces! (Of course you can adjust it. The first thing I do with Zero adjuster is to adjust it; Daiwa just makes it harder to do.)

I mostly use 20lb braid with a leader. But if you're using straight braid for bottom contact lures, 30lb would be better.

I'd use a M power rod, as the SV70 is finesse oriented, but MH should be OK as well, as it's also a general purpose reel, NOT a BFS reel. To be specific, I think 1/8oz and 1oz could both be pushing its limits.

Spool tension should have tiny amount of play or be whatever you want.  It's no different than any other reel.  Daiwa just made the knob hard to turn and called it a zero adjuster.  All my reels are set for a tiny amount of aide to side play zero adjuster or not.

If you adjust the zero adjuster, at least one of 5 things will will happen.

1.  Diawa will void your warranty, and recommend from now on your purchase Shimano reels.

2.  The Bass Police will come to your house, write you a ticket, search you home, and confiscate any unused Tackle, Warehouse stickers.

3. You will be required to go back to first grade, where you wont be allowed to graduate until you can read the words Zero, adjust, and explain the meaning of those two words.

4.  Every time you cast and your lure falls short of your target, or you get a backlash, the Bait Monkey will whisper in your ear, I told you not to adjust the zero adjust, now you need to buy a new reel.

5.   You will waste valuable fishing time, trying to get the adjustment back to zero.

I speak from experience, I always have to adjust my zero adjust Diawa reels.  I don't know if it is because I have a rebellious nature, or if I simply can't resist turning all knobs, and pressing all buttons on anything mechanical.  Either way, I will swear with my hand on my tackle box, I can read.

Also I would pair the reel to a medium rod and 12 lbs flouro for skipping plastics.  Think of it as a setup that does what a spinning reel can do but also handle stiff lines like flouro.

i do recall some language in the owner's manual about possible damage to something if you go to tight on zero adjust.  as you can tell, i didnt read much, or carefully.

it is my loosest spool by a mile.  but i have the brake set to "Granny" because i dont want no trouble.  it has been fairly flawless.
