Broken rod tip

Featured Replies

What do you all do with a rod that has about the last 2” broke off. Trash it or put another tip guide on it and keep using or something different? I guess it certainly depends on the rod. How much does it change the action?

Thanks, John.

I would glue a new tip onto it, but not do any wrap near the tip. Take it fishing and see if you still like the way it works/feels. If it is good, finish with a nice wrap. If not, you are not out much time or money. A lot depends on the rod. I have had some rods where losing an inch or two from the tip did not make much difference. And I have had a few rods where it changed the action/feel completely. I think a fast action rod is more effected by this kind of damage than a slower rod would be.

2 inches is about where depending on the action of the rod, gluing a new tip on might work and might not.  I would not do it.  I would fix it with this process.  Which works very well.  https://www.rodbuilding.org/library/repair-oquinn.html

I put a new tip on a daiwa regular action and now it is a fast. It wasn't a great bottom contact rod and now it's perfect. Same deal, about two inches lost. It'll be shorter and stiffer, but there's likely a place for it in your boat.

I’ve never liked just a new tip. The action of the rod is very much changed. I donate it to a kid or friend that don’t care

Thanks guys for the advice. Mick, that is one detailed tutorial for fixing a rod. I’ll probably put another tip on it and see how it fishes. At this point I have little to lose.

I do always cut it clean and put a tip on it and use it, I don't care how much it affects the action of that rod, I'll use it anyways and save money on it. It happened to me twice on my light spinning rods and honestly after fixing I didn't feel any difference. Thats why I have pack of 200 tips in so many size with a glue and lighter in my truck always with me and I can do it on water, Easy fix and totally worth it.
