Quick question regarding the vintage Lew's BB1N reel

What was the advantage of the V spool vs the conventional U spool?

    I'd like to know also.  I have a couple of older Shimanos with plastic inserts for making the spools V shaped.

    It was purported to minimize back lashes. The concept was the spool diameter decreased rapidly as the spool width decreased.  It was actually pretty effective.
