Squarebill Reel

Featured Replies

Hey yall! I was considering changing my Curado MGL 150 for a Curado MGL 70 on a DC705CB using 10-12# sniper. This is my primary squarebill rod with lures weighing 3/8-1/2oz. I’d like it to pull double duty if able with DT8s or RkCrawlers. Just seemed like the 150 size wasn’t handling the lighter sqaurebills. My only concern is the much higher IPT on the MGL 70 - 29” vs 24.5”. Any insight? Thank you!

The SLX MGL 70 comes in a 6.3:1. So does the Tatula 80, and it has greater line cap.

You could also go with a Tatula 100 in 6.3:1 - that's what I got on my #1 Crank rig.

$128 at Digitaka - https://www.digitaka.com/item/4/4/2/4960652205641

An mgl 150 spool should handle what you’re talking about just fine. I’m curious what it wasn’t doing for you.

It’s hard going from the Curado down to a SLX, although I started with SLX XTs and they are fantastic reels. It appears to be the only option in a shallower spool MGL with a lower gear ratio.

Is the Tatula the equivalent of the Shimano 150, or is a shallower spool? Does that Tatula 100 come with the SV spool?

Deeper spool - Curado MGL 150 holds 120yds of 10#, Tatula 100 holds 150yds of 12#

No, it doesn't have the SV spool - that'd be the Tatula SV TW 103 which is $155 at Digitaka - https://www.digitaka.com/item/4/4/2/4960652310550 - and while shallower than the Tatula 100, it's about the same as the Curado MGL 150 - 100yds of 14# on the Tatula SV

The scorpion MGL comes in 6.2:1.  Digitaka is out of the right hand model (but has the left if you're lefty).  I haven't checked other outlets.  I think the scorpion is equivalent to the curado.

I believe that Scorpion MGL is on the larger Curado K frame, so you might want to check on that.

Oh,... And don't disregard the SLX MGL,... Thay fish WAY above heir price. I have both the Curado MGL 71 and the SLX MGL 71 and I don't see much difference.

Let me put it this way,.... I bought an SLX MGL first and liked it so much I bought a Curado MGL 71 thinking it would be better. There wasn't much difference. I now have 4 SLX MGLs and only the one Curado MGL 71.
