Winter Carolina rig

Featured Replies

Who throws one in the winter? What conditions do you throw it in? What's your setup? I'm looking to learn, don't have much experience with this so maybe an area to grow this winter as I'm dragging around looking for hungry ladies..

I use the Slip Shot rig (finesse) in lieu of the traditional Carolina rig. Slip Shot rig uses the main line without any additional knots. 1/8-3/16 oz Cylinder weight, glass faced bead, Carolina Keeper weigh stopper and hook of choice. I use Owner #5133  because it lighter wire, string and sharp, size 1/0 or 2/0 depending on the diameter or the finesse worm. Line I prefer Maxima 5# copoly line.

Cold water the bass rarely chase down anything but will stripe lures in there face.

The light line and weight allows the worm to fall slow enough with good action. I like Roboworm Sculpin In oxblood light red flake.

Diawa Tatula TTU731MHFB

Lew's Tournament MP TS1SHMP 7.5:1

Sunline Shooter 20# main line

Berkley Big Game 12# leader

1/2, 3/4, or 1 oz LEAD weight

Glass bead

Mustad 3/0 Offset Round Bend

Zoom Fluke, LFT Ring Fry,  6th Sense Hogwalla

One of my favorite ways to catch ‘em in the winter. Dobyns 734 Fury, 1/2 to 3/4 oz weight, 15# main line, 12# leader, 3/0 rebarb, baby brush hog or trick worm

Are there specific things you throw at, like deep water hard bottom, brush piles, etc?

How long of a leader do you prefer?

I'm going to get some Carolina keepers to try the @WRB method as well. I like the idea of having flexibility.

I know everyone does it different but I enjoy hearing everyone's opinions on this.

Leader depends on where the bass are located, usually about 30” to 36” and rocky points and structure, whatever depth but I stay above 40’.

Mostly I’m fishing long points and ditches, dragging for hard spots, stumps etc. Leader length is usually 2-3’. Even though it’s winter time I will still fish it in 6-8’ especially if there is sand, red clay or small rock. If I’m fishing a deep water flat or where a ditch drops into the channel then I’m throwing the 3/4 oz weight.
