This is how I fish them and if I want a walk-the-dog popper I just use the LC Gunfish. As for how loud of a pop or splash you need to try different baits. Recently started fishing a Don Iovino popper (forget the name) which I would call a finesse popper. The bait splits water and works far better than my other ones in really clear, low, summer river conditions.
