Playing around with this the last couple times out.  One bite is all I've managed so far, been trying the "dirting" action.  A med-slow cadence of half reel turns and rod pops, 7/16oz weight.  I'm thinking I'm 15-18' down on a 25' flat based on what it takes to return to the bottom when paused.  I don't know if I've been putting it in front of fish yet, but open to advice on techniques to try.

Shorter rod?   I smash with a 6ft 6in rod.  I also don't fish it that slow.

Length (pull) and speed of rod twitches took a bit to get down.

Check out this video starting at 20:00 to hear  Josh Jones’ thoughts on why big fish follow and don’t eat.

This walk the dog action sometimes is the trick, especially in deeper waters where they just aren’t used to seeing that kind of action.

So his theory is that the cooler the water the less their brains work and they react without thinking and the warmer the water the smarter they are? It makes me feel better that he said in 70+ degree water that 99 out 100 suspended fish won’t bite.. I have noticed that all of the bass I have caught on Livescope since the spawn has came off the bottom or straight up from the bottom to eat my bait

Some other stuff to try:

Fluke, if they are up in the water column

Silent jerk bait

A rig

and, I haven't tried this but it's on my list - a blade bait, but mid column, because you can get the shad size right.

IMO the early summer shad eaters can be very picky about size

Our lake has mainly alewives, gizzards, and bluegills…
