I ask because I ordered 30# earlier tonight based on the fact that it is listed as .007 diameter.  I read a thread earlier that mentioned Sufix 832 diameter was larger than what was listed.  This made me wonder about X9 diameter listings....after already ordering. 

 

EDIT: In Crystal.  Flame Green has a larger diameter listed.  I assumed because of coloring added to the line versus the white of Crystal.  Would have ordered the Flame Green if the same size had been listed for both.

There’s no standards for measuring the diameter of line or for specifying the strength rating.   Braid is not perfectly round so it’s hard to measure its diameter.  I’ve measured lots of different braids with a caliper and micro meter.  The results depend on how much pressure you put on the line.   If I’m a marketing person I’m gonna put a lot of pressure on the line to measure it as thin as possible.

Regardless of the problems with measuring braid it has been my experience that the braids with the higher strand counts are better performing and thinner than the 4 strand braids.  Of course I have not used them all.  I just received a new one that claims very small diameter, and it surely looks and feels like it is smaller than most.   Since braid lasts so long, I have no problem paying the premium price for premium braid.

 

Its thin. I know that the 10lb 832 is thicker than a 15lb X9.

 

x9 is thin, but I think berkely is taking some liberties with the dia they are claiming.  Ive only used crystal x9, but the green x5 sure bleeds a ton.  Although I dont think its as thin as they claim, its a solid performing line.  I use the 20lb on a 9' M power surf rod and it casts and handles great.  Coated braids are great, but the performance changes once that coating wears off and that's inevitable.  x9 isnt coated so its doesnt change a whole lot after use.

I really like x9, but it is definitely thicker than what appears on the label.  Here is a shot of 6lb x9 rated to be #0.8 diameter next to YGK X-Braid #0.8, the Berkley is at the bottom.  As we can see, it's slightly larger than the YGK, which leads me to believe the X9 6lb is more like #1.0 diameter.

 

One would think a professional lab wouldn't misuse the term "strain."  It's not breaking "strain," it's breaking strength.  Strain is the deformation of a material from stress. It is simply a ratio of the change in length to the original length. 

 

Optically measuring the diameter makes a lot of sense, IMO.
