Looking for blank recommendations

Featured Replies

I need a new rod. Criteria:

7’6” or less

H/XH

ModF/F

Lure rating 1ish-6ish oz

Looking for a shorter rod than my SC MojoBass 7’10” to throw from my kayak.

Preferably a blank from Mud Hole as I have a GC from there.  If not, not a deal breaker.

TW has the 7’6 Irod Sniper Swimbait for $130 on sale. I’ve heard good things, but can’t get my hands on one to try out.

Open up the Rod Geeks catalog and pick one, they are now and always have built most of St. Croix's blanks. Your Mojo is either a Carbon 2 or 3 blank, originally all the Mojos were Carbon 2.

Is it the longer rod or the longer handle they sometimes come with that’s a problem in a kayak?

Honestly, I think it’s just overall length. I fished it yesterday from the bank and don’t remember the handle length being an issue.

I just have trouble visualizing the length, other than handle length being an issue in a kayak but not otherwise.

Yeah, you’re probably right too. Going out in the am, plan to throw it a good bit. Will have more feedback tomorrow. May be that I’m good. I mean, really four inches of less rod probably wouldn’t make that much a difference anyway…

You don't hold your rod, nor are your body positioned anything like each other bank fishing vs kayak fishing. Rear grip length and type of grip makes or breaks the comfort and ergonomics of fishing from a kayak, most are short enough that anything over 6 1/2 ft. long with a short enough grip to come in or out of your rocket launcher behind your back, any rod holders without hanging up or having to overextend past a comfortable position, or it won't hang up on any type of clothing you are wearing will work. I classify my kayak rods as workhorse rods, I care how they fish and make my fishing easier and care less how stylish they are, a lot of time and effort goes into getting where the fish are, I save a lot of effort if I don't have to overextend myself or reach uncomfortably to switch rods, remove a rod from a rod holder under heavy fish load or after retying, or risk hanging up on anything while I'm fishing.

I am not a kayak angler so what is the optimal length for rocket launcher rod holders ? For purposes of discussion the average length for over the counter 7’ rod is 14” from center of reel seat to end of rod butt.
