Fishing and chemotherapy

I was recently diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. I had my first chemo treatments 9 days ago. The treatments are 2 days in a row and will last for 4-6 months. I’m still wiped out from round one. Is fishing a good idea? If I can get past the fatigue and nausea, it would be nice to do the thing I love. From Googling it, it seems that many say it isn’t worth the risk of infections (from small nicks and cuts) and lake water. Does anyone have any experience/advice they could share?

If I may chime in.
I’d talk to your doctor. See what he says. That and listen to what your body is telling you.  There might be days where you have lotta energy. The next day you might be really tired.
Having a good support group around you helps. More than you might think.
As someone else mentioned. The mental health is a big boost. If after talking with doctor and depending on how you feel. If you want to go out and fish. Why not? If you go out and sit on a dock or bank of a river.  I think that would help you feel little better.
When I was fishing the rivers in Washington. Half the fun was just being out with nature. Seeing Mother Nature at work. Looking up and seeing eagle flying over the river. It’s the beauty of nature that relaxes and heals both mind and body.

So as an update to the post, I got enough strength to get back out on the water. My doctor said it was okay with precautions. One of my fishing buddies went with me. He did everything from loading and unloading my boat, to handling my fish. Wore plenty of sunscreen and a big hat. Felt good to get out again.😊

Great job, and hope the recovery and treatment keep going well for you friend!

Hello Rodney. I too have blood cancer myelofibrosis. I have battled six years to this point. I fish three days a week but my stamina is waning. I am probably starting a jack inhibitor in a couple months. I thank God for each sunrise and long term is tomorrow. Indeed, speak to your doctor and go for the gusto when you can if allowed. Wish you all the best,  kick butt.
