I recently broke my spinning rod that I use for soft plastics.  I replaced it with this 6'-6" medium heavy fast rod.  Now I'm wondering if medium heavy is to much rod for finesse baits like paddle tails and other soft plastics. 

 

Thoughts?

 

Not really. I used a 6'6" MH spinning rod for years when fishing for creek trout, lake bluegills, and ned rigs/paddle tails for largemouth.

Worked fine, the key is to make sure it can load the weight and cast it. If it can load the rod and fling it out there its good to fish.

However if you are using very light weight stuff and it doesnt work, then maybe use it for jerkbaits. (since that rod would fit the need for it perfectly)

@Ohnooze Have you fished with it yet? Try it and see how ya like it. I’ve got two rods that say MH but act more like a club, I keep checking them for a Louisville slugger stamp.

         Then again, I’ve got some MH’s that are on the softer side. I would try it, ya might like it better.

I'm using it today actually.  So I guess I'll see in a few.

Let us know! I think Abu rods are a touch soft sometimes but MH on spinning isn't my first or second choice. That'd be a really nice rod to let a coangler borrow who isn't comfortable with casting gear so it can serve a purpose if you want to use it that way.

Well fishing was terrible today and didn't catch anything so I can't say how well it handles in that regard.  But it feels and cast decent.  I kind of feel like it may be more rod than I need for most soft plastics like paddle tails.

Question for you guys.  Do you think medium light / fast spinning rod to too light for larger bass?  I'm going to use the rod that I started this topic for, for heavier lures.  Medium heavy feels too heavy to me for finesse fishing.  Don't know if I should go with medium or medium light.

 

 

Depends on the area you are fishing. I fish mostly ML when fishing the rocky reefs of Ontario for smallies and have caught up to 5-6 pounders with no issues. Those same rods work in most situations here in Indiana too because most instances are pretty open without heavy weeds or wood

 

I don't think I would try that around laydowns, timber or heavy weeds though!!

@Ohnooze, I've caught several decent sized bass on my ML spinning rod.  Actually, I use a ML spinning rod for most of my applications.

hmmm....maybe I should stick with Medium / fast.

 

Thinking about picking up an uglystik carbon.  It's gotten some really good reviews from what I have seen.
