Low profile baitcast reels, Shimano SLX 70 mgl alternatives

Thanks everyone, just trying to get the lowest price, just want to make sure if I add it up for m not what I can get them locally for, lol.

Keep an eye out for used stuff as well. Or open box, unused. I've had decent luck on eBay, if you go with a highly rated seller it should be fine. Or buy through the yard sale on this site. A good quality reel can be cleaned up/repaired if needed in many cases.

I'm fine with lightly used, will keep an eye out.

Many of my reels came from used market forums.  Only had a problem with one.  Sent it out for repair, upgrading and tuning.  A couple washers were missing.  Great reel now.

Where or how do you get the $18 coupon, funny Alixexpress wants to charge me sales tax, lol. I'd like to purchase more than one but will keep that in mind.

I know when I am throwing my old curado's or the new SLX's I notice the difference. Not sure what I need to do to my old citicas they are not throwing as nice, maybe change out the bearings but then I have no idea what size etc...plus even though they are the dsv models they are bigger and I like smaller.

Send reels to DVT for cleaning.  Let him know they aren't casting as far as they used to.  He will check the bearings.  May only need a deep cleaning.

I'm cheap too.  Only buy steep discounts new or used reels at excellent prices.

Have purchased several reels from Aliexpress with no problem.  They weren't knockoffs.

I have a couple of citicas that i should do that with, not sure I am familiar with DVT.

Nevermind I figured it out, question is do I want to spend the money on servicing the citicas...tend to do stuff myself but they are not casting like they should but I have abused them, lol.

If you haven't had them serviced in a while, I would suggest send them off.  They probably need a deep clean and fresh lube.  Reels of that era are simple machines really and a good servicing will get them back to good shape.

Welp I bit the bullet and ordered two Curado 70HG and one 71XG ( I know this is left hand and on purpose) from AE for 128ea. Hoping that they are the real deal but sounds like they are from folks posting. I also looked at the SLX 70 but with shipping they were about in the same ballpark and wasn't able to find the 7 ratios that I was wanting only saw 6 and 8. I saw some decent deals on the slx xt's previous generation and may circle back in the future depending on how these turn out.

This will allow me to swap out couple of my citicas and maybe send them out to get cleaned up and then back in the rotation. Thanks everyone for the information!

For future reference, may I introduce you to jp.mercari.com, the largest Japan eBay equivalent? The things there are mostly used items, but the prices are pretty good, like $80 for barely used Tatulas. Plus, the shipping service, Buyee, is constantly giving out coupons, like the current best one is about 15% off, which basically translates to free shipping for order over $150.

This still priced well or did the Tariffs wreck this too?

I wish i had ordered more from AE, they are exactly the same tha I can tell. Once all the tarriff stuff started happening i started buying from Buyee and bought 16 Scorpions. The problem is left hand reels are not as common and it can be a mixed bag. Probably bought 10 reels that way, some look brand new others are more beat on than my reels. But i have a bunch of spare parts and only 1-2 reels needed anything besides a pinion bearing. The curados from AE have one additional bearing on the handle shaft AND have micro module gears but once the tariffs hit they are much more expensive, I think the cheapest now are 150 w/ import fees. Last three I bought from buyee including the extra fees were more like $110, before tariffs I was avg 80-90 a reel. I like the scorpions though and they are smooth with a pinon support bearing but if the cost was the same I would get the newer curados. The newer curados on tacklewarehouse go for 250 so the ones on AE are still cheaper just not as cheap pre tariffs.

20% tariff. Everything else pretty much stays the same, the low prices, the frequent discount coupon, etc. So, if you need to buy some reels from Japan, I'd still recommend this.

Drats, was hoping they were a little behind haha

I've been curious about the scorpions, but until things settle and theses horror stories of surprise $100 delivery fees die down I'm gonna have to just stick with what I got

The 16 scorpions are a very nice reel, carbontex drags, xship (pinion support), the 70 series have shallow spools. They basically sit between the slx reels (not the mgl slx) and the newer curados. The newer 21 curado mgls have that extra shaft bearing and micro module gears. I did pick last time a slx70 mgl and it was basically a scorpion and they sometimes are cheaper than the 16 scorpions. The one I picked up wasnin rough shape and was geary when winding, opening it up it had water and I assume it was saltwater since the pinion support bearing had some rust spots. Soaked all the bearings in my cheap ultrasonic cleaner and cleaned the reel and lube everything and good as new...some I have gotten that were like new but just fyi you should be able to tear them down and clean if needed which is really easy imho.

One more thing, the nice thing about the shimano even though they are jdm reels most everything is common to the us reels, you can go to shimano website and order just about any part that you would need and they are pretty reasonable on prices. If you have any more questions about them let me know.

I will also say this the metaniums are the next level up and super nice reel they are out there also ...

@bishoptf you apparently like the Curado MGL, I've been tempted, but I have a 2019 SLX MGL and I can't see how much of a difference the Curado would make. Maybe a smoother retrieve or whatever, but for the price it casts just like I need to to.

Its a bit touchier than any of my Diawas, but when the conditions are relatively calm it sends like it's a letter to Santa

But at the right price I'd adopt another. I've been keeping an eye of FB market (for reel deals in general), but dudes want just under MSRP for a reel that has clearly been put through the ringer.

Yeah facebook is a joke most of the time folks selling stuff about what you can get new, yea no thanks. I would have to look at the 19 slx mgl but my guess if it has xship (pinion support bearing) its probably d**n near the same thing as the 16 scorpion which inwas getting for a erage $75-85 a reel...some new in box I picked up for $100. The newer curado mgl have an extra shaft bearing and the micro module gears, those are the ones I got on AE for 128, they are a sweet reel.
