I get the strong impression these reels are to be tossed after a season or two;I really like the new David Fritts reel, but wonder where do you get it serviced after 2 yrs. of hard use.

If you don't know how to repair your own reels you can send it to the BPS reel service outfit in Springfield.  If you do, you can call the BPS reel repair line and get the parts department. There's some pretty friendly folks there that can help you whether you have the reel schematic or not.  BTW,  I was a BPS doubter but their reels appear to holding up alot better than in many years past so long as you're not fishing 100 + days a year with them.

They work-------for awhile. Buy yourself a good quality reel like a Shimano or Abu Garcia, it will be worth it in the long run.

Now, that's funny!

They hold up pretty well if you don't use them! :;)

I have many different kinds of reels but my favorite is an older (at least 15 yrs.) BPS that I bought as a spare for a boat-in Canada trip. My reels get reasonable care. They are lubed and wiped off regularly during the season and about 2 years out of 3 they are partially broken down, cleaned and relubed with both oil and grease. My BPS reels have lasted as long as the Shimano's, Daiwa's and Quantums I have.

I think my Curado is a better reel than any of my BPS but time will tell. I question that it is twice as good which is about the price difference.

I'm pretty sure that it is twice as good as any BPS reel with the possible exception of the Johnny Morris reels(and even then it's close).  However if you are really that unsure I have 3 BPS reels I will trade you for the curado.   ;D

I had along time BPS employee tell me (at the store) to buy Shimano Curado over the Johnny Morris reel. He said they had gotten a lot of the BPS's back and never see the Curados come back.

Of course, this was "off the record".

I have one of the cheaper D Fritts crankin reels that was on sale for $49. So far, so good, but I consider it disposable if it goes bad.

I have to tell ya, I have 2 BPS extreme reels and they're REALLY good. They are tough, and seem to never backlash bad *knock on wood*.

I think you know what I mean. Unless you're hardcore on the water, these reels will suit anyone just as well as a Shimano or Revo or Pflueger which cost double the price.

It is not the reel fault for backlashing.  It is the man who is using it.

THAT EXPLAINS WHY I HAVE A 40YARD BALL OF KNOTS IN MY REEL

Hawgin, When I saw your trade offer I stopped for a moment and considered replying in a positive manner. Then I got thinking, first I bought the Curado to see what all the hype was about if I traded I might never know. Also if I got three reels I might not have enough rods to go around so I would likely buy more rods.

Too many rods and reels can degenerate into a negative discussion when I'm trying to get the lady to understand why we don't need some trinket or another and there she stands looking at two rod racks bristling like a porky with things she looks at as trinkets. I'm not sure just how many baitcasters I have  but I'm sure it is closer to 30 than to 20. Some are new but some also also go back to my "Whippersnapper" days when now I'm for sure in the "Geezer" class.

I will keep you in mind!

the_muddy_man  when you get back from fork you will be expert with that other brand of reel. ;D ;D ;)

YOUR MORE CONFIDENT THAN I AM about my ability to get this right!!!!!!!!!

We have a new BPS return center in Macon GA and they sell ReMan reels they had about 50 or 60 Johnny Morris reels fo 60 to 80 dollars each.I did not see very many Pflugers or Quantum or any others for that mater

I love it, pure realism  ;D

cart7,

Just playing...I knew exactly what you meant.

"Off the record" some of my aquaintances at BPS tell me the house brands breakdown and are returned a lot, but BPS is VERY GOOD at fixing or replacing the reels. At the various pricing points the profit margin is high, but doesn't justify making improvements in the equipment. Replacement is more cost effective for the company.

The extremes break ALOT.  Once you get into the Pro Qaulifier, Prolite finesse ( my fav. ), Clunns, and the Morris there real good.
