Switched to mono

Featured Replies

So today was the first outing switching from 40 pound braid to 12 pound suffix elite mono on my bp carbonlite 2.0 medium combo. I feel I got better casting distance with the mono. Backlashes are non existent with the brakes set correctly. I was throwing a 3/4 ounce rapala xrap. Which I have always thrown on that combo. I know it’s rated to 5/8 but with braid it worked well. I definitely need to throw that on a medium heavy now. The mono did have some stretch. But the one fish I  managed to land today hookset and feel was wonderful.

I will be probably swapping my medium heavy over to mono as well. Only reason I’d keep braid on it is to throw a frog this summer. But honestly I’ll probably throw that on mono too lol

Congrats on having some success with a different approach.

Word of friendly advice, leave the braid on the rig you plan on fishing the frog.

Especially if there's heavy surface/sub surface soft cover involved,

which there almost always is.

You'll be glad you did.

Oh for sure that’s all we frog fished with in Florida was braid. Not sure what Iowa will have to offer for summer water conditions yet lol. I’ll probably have to get another set up to frog fish

I too fish 12-15 lb mono on most my baitcasting setups with no issues at all.
braid for frogs, and sometimes swim jig.
I know a lot of guys speak of stretch, but for pitching jigs and Texas rigs, i really don’t have a lot of line out, so I don’t see it as an issue. Cranks - the rods I use are moderate, so I’m not putting tons of pressure on the line.
works for me, and I replace the first 100yards of line a lot. Mono is cheap.

Could not agree more I’ll just replace the line a few times a year. No big deal at all

I use 12 pound Sufix mono (Siege) on my curado 200i.

its amazing stuff.

Sufix makes amazing mono

link to facts on "braid"

I used 12-lb mono and later Seaguar fluoro for 47 years, and in the last decade of that, refused to try braid because I saw too many friends cut out softball-size yellow knots.

Started using FEP-coated braid on spinning tackle in 2017, switched all baitcasters in 2018, and in 2019, when Japan X-braid dropped below its starting price of $1/yd, I began switching everything to that.

My reels loaded with mono/fluor now are for loaners, because they inevitably get the line behind the spool, then listen the 2nd time to my speach on manual-bail technique.

If you're getting better distance on mono than braid, you were using the wrong braid.

Entirely possible. Always used fins windtamer on spinning rods. ( used to inshore fish a lot when I lived in Florida) baitcasters have always gotten 30-40 pound original powerpro. I agree there is some seriosuly nice braid out there now
