why am I much less successful with full sized jigs?

Featured Replies

My fishing partner says that I don't catch fish on big jigs because I'm never around big fish. 😂

Weight!

I throw full size jigs that only weigh 1/4 oz.

ROF is extremely more important than size.

@Catt does the ROF matter as much when fishing from the bank? Especially if the water is only a few feet deep?

Yes sir 😉

Rate of fall is not determined by the depth of the water. It's determined by the aggressiveness of the bass.

A two pound bass can stop one oz weight from ever hitting bottom & you will never feel it.

Thank you. So do you just try different weights to see which one the bass are in the mood for? Seems awfully time consuming.

Rate of fall

Retrieval rate

Rhythm walking the dog

Jerks-n-pauses

Alabama shake

This is what triggers the reaction from the bass. Figuring it out is time consuming but essential to getting bit.

The old me showed up today.  Jig-skunked.   I threw a variety except my finesse ones.  Nada!

heck, I was catching the with a chatter bait and crankbait, and I’m famously not great with those either.  Haha.

I’m really new to jigs but enjoying the intricate fishing style. I throw finesse swim jigs. 3.16-5/16 I trim the skirts up some to enhance the trailer action and give the skirt some life. So far a zoom super chunk hr trailer has been the best. I have some paca chunks and middle bait chunks but haven’t had any bites on them. Maybe too much action for how cool the Midwest water is still? Today was the first day I tried a full size super chunk trail to change the ROF. And wow it really slowed the jig down. Lots to learn and everyone here has been so helpful. Personaly I’ll stick to finesse jigs or aggressively trimmed jigs.
