Quick Kayak Trip

Featured Replies

All the reservoirs nearby are flooded so I decided to go to a small lake nearby. I finally got the kayak back out after (I think) a 2 year hiatus. It was really simple to take a few rods, a few baits, a lunch, a paddle, and a life jacket.

The morning was over cast & rainy, with a slight breeze. The water was about 45 degrees at the surface and muddy. I disconnected the jerkbait that I did not have a chance to untie and put on a 1/4 oz bladed jig. Over the next 10-15 minutes, I switched on/off between the bladed jig, a spinnerbait, and a ned rig.

After about 20 minutes, I got my first bite with the ned rig. Whatever hit the bait never committed, so I hopped it a few times, and let it soak some more.  I cast back out to the same spot and let it soak, and then began to slowly drag the bait back. I felt a little bit of pressure on the line, set the hook and caught a really lethargic 2 lb LMB. It never jumped, never boiled at the surface, it just pulled  it gave up at the side of the boat. Over the next two hours, I caught maybe 6 bass, most in the 1-2 pound range. My biggest bass pushed 3 lbs, but he didn't make it for sure. I explored some other spots, but all fish were at that same drop off where sand and grass meet rock. I will definitely check that spot out again when the water warms a little.

Overall it was a fun day. I caught several fish and when I was done, I just had to dolly the kayak to the truck throw it up on the bed extender, strap it down and call it a day. I need more days like this.

Gotta love cold muddy water. The only thing I wanted to try that I didn’t was a Shad rap. I’m surprised the spinnerbait and bladed jig didn’t produce though.
