Help with new setup

Featured Replies

Hello all, I recently purchased a 7’3 Heavy powered Falcon EVO casting rod from my local Walmart as it felt really nice, and I was wanting to throw smaller alabama rigs as well as some other stuff at my local locks and dam for some bigger bass. My question is what line would you all recommend for this setup, and can anyone recommend some smaller alabama rigs that are around 1.5oz fully rigged?

Thanks.

Yum flash mob mini with two or three weightless plastics and two 1:8 oz will come in under that weight and I threw them in basically that rod already.

go with 50# braid.

If you're doing A-Rigs - I'd go no lower than 20# Flourocarbon/Mono/Hybrid or just run 40#-50# straight braid.

Top of my head?

Yum Flash Mob Jr

 - 3"-3.5" Keitech Easy Shiner

 - 2.8-3.8 Kalin Tickle Tails

 - 4" Kalin Jerk Minow

 - 2.75 Zoom Boot Tail

 - 4" Zoom Fluke

All either weightless or on 1/16oz jig heads (suggest Kalin Triple Threat for those)

Yumbrella ultralight rig, 1/8oz guppy heads, 3" mayor main baits, 2.5" teasers. Should be about 1.25oz

12lb yo zuri hybrid or 15lb fluoro.

line visibility isn't a concern for faster moving baits, IMO. For that reason, I'd go with braid and select the weight by the size/diameter of the hooks on the rig you'll be throwing. 40lb. would be a good starting point as you'll be dealing with exposed hooks.

I’m assuming one out of the two baits with a jighead on it would be on the very bottom wire in the middle? I’m brand new to this stuff and I’ve seen a bunch of different ways to rig it lol

Yes. I can’t remember if the yum is two up too and in the bottom and one middle (I think this is the case) or one top, on bottom and three middle. I think two one two in which case two up top and weightless. Middle can be weightless and usually a half inch bigger and maybe a different color. Bottom two get an eighth ounce head.

I'm nuts and I kinda suck with an a-rig.  I use 17lb flouro.. I think it is 17..could be 16.

I noticed with braid, I can almost hear the string rattle and buzz as the bait rips closer to me.  especially if I am jerking it.   I think it is the line going thru water?  dunno..I kinda have the ears of a beagle.  flouro slips doesnt seem to make the mystery noise...

again, I suck.  I tend to snag them underwater in the trees more than catching fish.   I think my bait is called, "and they call me Fred" or something.  I bought them cuz the name was fun.
