How do you get your 1 piece rod to the fishing hole?  Now that I'm thinking of going with the family, I realize that a rod would have to set inbetween the kids in the backseat.

I'm envious of those of you who can walk or stow it in the back of your pickup.  I'm expecially envious of the folks who can leave their rods on the boat.

If your car has a luggage rack, you can go to the Home Depot and grab a 10' length of 4" ABS plastic pipe, a glue on cap and a screw on cap. Cut the pipe 2" longer than your longest rod, glue the cap on one end and the the screw on reciever to the other. a couple of bungie cords and you have a rod carrier. Only costs about $30. The other option is a rod carrier that bolts to your bumper or traier hitch. Much more expensive and doesn't protect your rods. I hope this helps.

lay down the back seat of my car, put the tip of the rod in the trunk and the handle diagonally in the back seat....harder to explain than to do, lol.

I lay down the backseat on the drivers side...and the handles sit right next to the door on the passenger side.  6'6" rods do this with no problem.  Surprisingly, they don't even move when I hit a bump...so its cheap and effective for me.

forgot..in the SUV..I lay the rods in the back, propped up onthe back seat in an x pattern.  That works well, too.

Way back when I was fishing regularly I was single I and would just stick the rods in the back of the SUV and let them hang over the rear seat.  However, now that I have a family I'm concerned about having the rods stick out inbetween my 18 mo and 9 year old daughters when we drive about an hour and 20 minutes to the in-laws cabin.  They're pretty active....  That's why I've been considering 2 piece rods that would fit completely in the back.

However, lately I've been thinking about the roof and like the idea of the rod carrier so I could get a one piece.  Since I've been collecting tools recently, but haven't built anything I might try to build my own per Alpster's suggestions.  Then again, it might be 2011 before I actually build something

This is what works for me Put the rod in at an angle butt side in the back seat and the tip to the windsheild Close the door on the top 8 inches of the rod. then swear a little take the eight inch piece of the tip , that now dangleing off your rod and throw it away AND CLOSE YOU DOOR the rod should now fit in. This method has worked so far with  FLW,Berkley and Shakesphere rods

Muddy, there are 5 '6" rods ya know.  

option 1: Strap the wife to the top of the car like a christmas tree, and angle the rod from the passanger seat to the back of the vehicle.

2nd option: What Ronnie said. I built one of those for shipping rods to MI.  I would go with this option.  Option 1 might not go over too good.

I solved this problem very easily.  I use my one piece set of rods when I fish out of my boat and I have a whole set of two-piece bass rods that I use if I have to travel somewhere in the car without my boat.  I even have several 3 piece rods that I use if I am flying somewhere.  Therefore, you can store the rods comfortably, whichever the situation is and the baitmonkey will be happy with the purchase of so many rods and reels.  Everybody wins.

I'm not sure I like muddy's suggestion.     Comments on option #1 from GMAN would lead to dangerous territory     I'll have to consider Ronnie's idea some more.

On a related note, they sell magnetic mounts for rods that attach to your vehicle. My dad has a one piece Lamiglass 11' surf rod... How do you get THAT to the beach? With the mag mounts! ;D
