Need Help Rod Selection

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I am considering purchasing a new spinning rod.

St. Croix Avid

Shimano Crucial Drop Shot

Primarily, I would be dropshotting but would also be able to throw a couple jigs here and there.  I have other rods for that.  So, I hear that the Crucials are extremely sensitive but lack a bit of power.  I was wondering if the Crucials are more sensitive than the Avid's.  I hear the Avids have a little more power and both are very light.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  :o

WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AVID.

Avids are nice. Some people really like the Crucials, and I've handled them and gotta say they seem sweet. But I only use G Loomis and St. Croix, so I gotta say Avid....brand loyalty, which most have but won't really admit.. ;D

Welcome aboard!

Avid AS66MF or AS70MF

I have the Shimano Crucial 7'2" drop-shot rod in medium power.  This is an unbelievable drop shot rod (that's all I use it for).  I don't know how it would handle other applications, but I am very impressed with how if functions with drop shot rigs.

I have the medium power, which works very well in Lake Erie for 5 lb+ smallmouth in 30 ft of water. I also use heavier weights like 1 oz for the bottom weight and it overloads the rod a little bit, but I drift instead of really casting it, so it's not a big deal. When I am on smaller, calmer lakes, I cast lighter weights (like 3/8 oz) and it does well with this. Bass Pro also offers the Crucial 7'2" drop shot rod in Medium Heavy Power. I have never handled this rod, but this one may give you the increase in power you might be looking for. I can't say enough on how well the Crucial is for detecting strkies on the drop shot rig, so if you are looking for a primary drop shot rod, this is the one to buy.
