Ned vs Grub Heads

What is the difference between a ned rig head, and a round ball head for a curly tail grub?

The only difference I see is that a ned head normally has a flat nose section. Heck I could take my belt sander and just and a flat on a some round heads and make much cheaper than buying ned heads if that's the only difference.

I agree with you, I'm not a ned expert by any means, but a 1/10oz ballhead, #1 hook, and a 4" straight tail worm can fish and catch just like a ned.  The slow fall and swim near the bottom is very similar to types of ned fishing.  If your lake is weed choked, then there really is no difference at all because both behave similarly if and when they land on the grass.

A round head of similar diameter creates less turbulence than the flat ned head.  The flat of the ned head also increases the likelihood it will ‘stand up’ when it reaches the bottom.  VMC does exactly what you’re describing with their stand up Shaky Head.  Comparing prices, it is definitely cheaper to grind them yourself (especially if you already own a belt sander or grinding wheel).

Thanks for the replies.

The Big Bite Baits round heads are $2 for 10, whereas ned heads are $1 each about. I always have the BBB heads on hand, so it'd be an easy enough experiment to flatten a head to try. I happen to have a full range of tools already for my other hobbies and work.

Sand  the round head you have a Ned.

But keep it 1/16 or it ain't finesse 😂

Ha, I don't do true finesse stuff, just finessey.
