Garmin/hummingbird compatibility

Featured Replies

Can't seem to find the answer here anywhere.  I have a Garmin striker fishfinder mounted at the bow and I want to get a Minn Kota Terrova.  I can get the model with either the dual chirp or mega imaging.  I know the mega imaging will not work with the Garmin.  The Garmin will work with the dual chirp using an adapter though.   However, I'd like to get the mega imaging and possibly upgrade the Garmin to a hummingbird in the future.  Will the Garmin still work with it or are the cables, etc different?  Garmin can't answer it and I'm waiting for Minn Kota to get back to me.

Garmin and MinnKota don't play well together.

MinnKota TM - Lowrance or Humminbird sonar.

Garmin sonar - Force or Kraken TM.

Otherwise you'll drive yourself mad(der).

If you get the US2 based transducer, that's a dumbed down transducer that works across brands for basic 2D.  It should work with your garmin with an adapter, but I don't know that head unit well enough.

I also wouldn't base my decisions this way necessarily.  The striker is a pretty basic fish finder, one that you're likely to upgrade in the future if you're actively using your electronics up front.  If you're not actively using them up front, then why go through the effort.  I'd say look hard at what you want it for before you make decisions about integrated units.  For me, I find that the only things I need up front are FFS, a map, and current depth.  If I'm on the trolling motor, I'm not watching side or down imaging.  Without FFS, it would be maps and depth on a 2D.  If that's what you're using, leave the striker mounted as is and get the trolling motor that fits your needs.  If you have the transducer strapped onto your current TM, then think about putting it on the stern.

The US2 transducer worked with Garmin with the cable adapter but is no longer available.  Since they say the Dual Spectrum Chirp will work with the adapter,  I think there's a chance that the 2D transducer inside the mega imaging transducer will work with the adapter.   I have no way of knowing for sure.  Minn Kota may not even know for sure.  Modern fish finders can determine what transducer you have and adjust accordingly.  If the Garmin gets confused by the MEGA transducer it might not work even though the 2D transducer is compatible.

I think I'm just going to get the dual spectrum chirp unit since I'm not going to need any advanced features on the front of the boat. Thanks for all the help. If it doesn't work well with the Garmin, I'll either just attach the Garmin transducer to the bottom of the TM or just buy a hummingbird unit.

Obviously it's your choice.  However, if you're used to the Garmin, I'd stick with that brand and get all the features they offer.  I've attached many Garmin transducers to my Minn Kota's without a problem.

I'm not used to the Garmin. It came with the boat and I'm more familiar with hummingbird units. Plus the Garmin trolling motors are a lot more than I'm willing to spend
