Anyone throw a whopper plopper 60?

Featured Replies

I grabbed one the other day for my bfs setup. Figured I’d throw it a little this am. Got it out and tied it on. 2 observations…

1) this came with a split ring out of the box. All other sizes do not. I tied to the split ring

2) seemed to blow out some. With a slow retrieve, it ran straight, but the plop wasn’t nearly as noticeable

Anyone else?

When they first came out I picked up a couple to try out for a slightly more finesse option in my clear smallmouth rivers.

I noticed as well that it tends have a much more subtle plop.

After throwing it around a good bit, I have retired all mine. The 60 gets a ton of blow ups and hits, but almost every fish misses it or doesnt get hooked. Now this is just my personal experience. I could be fishing it wrong, but I have tried every other size of whopper plopper and had good success. But the 60 just didnt work for me.

I think it's perfect for the conditions it's designed for and that is a finesse top water. Similar to a Tiny Torpedo having a smaller prop, the 60 doesn't make a lot of surface disturbance, but that is the exact reason I reach for it. I normally start with a bigger size and then downsize if it isn't getting any blow ups.  Never had a problem with hook ups. Most of the time they take it pretty deep. Then again, I work it very slow with pauses.

Seems like the smaller the WP, the slower I have to retrieve it to keep it from spinning, and of course, the shorter my cast. I won't go below the 90 anymore. Small fish seem to like it and the 110.

I've had a couple good days on the 60 fishing for smallmouth when the baitfish are very small and the water is really calm.
