Is the NRX+ 822S DSR NOT Ideal for Casting/Dragging? What is Ideal?

Featured Replies

I am looking for a high-end dropshot rod for primarily casting/dragging. Based on the info I've found so far it looks like the NRX+ 822S DSR would NOT be a good choice for casting/dragging a dropshot, which is primarily what I do.

Can anyone out there that's used this rod let me know your thoughts on this?

Also, any recommendations on an ideal high-end rod for casting/dragging dropshots?

I tend to use heavier dropshot weights (3/8 - 1/2 ounce, sometimes 3/4 ounce) to better ensure it's tight lined and pinned to the bottom.

I also fish mostly open hook/nose-hooked smaller soft plastics.

Thanks!
John

I use my 822s in the manner you described all the time.  However, the weights you listed are pretty heavy for this rod.  I use traditional smaller drop shot weights.  You are describing what I would call power shot, and need a rod appropriate for that weight range.  I would look at a medium to medium heavy fast.  Those are similar to jig weights. You could cast those on a baitcaster easily.

I use my 843s for wolf river rig pumping flies similar to drop shotting. It can handle 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 very well. I even go up to 1oz pencil weight on this rod if river current to fast. I try the 903s nrx+ inshore model and steez the one rod for 1/2 oz drop shotting and does well but have not try 3/4 on it.

Are you using braid with a leader? Dragging the weights you use will twist the line using a spinning reel. The weight may have a swivel imbedded to help but the drop shot soft plastic doesn’t let the line to the reel untwist, lets the weight roll.

I believe the Slip Shot rig out performs casting and dragging a drop shot rig.

Suggest choosing a bottom contact rod with the power for 1/2 oz nominal weight with XFast action.

NRX+ Inshore 843S has the specs that work.

Thank you for the feedback.

Use a bait casting reel.

Glx 863 great rod for Great Lakes heavy drop shots.  I'd throw 1/2 from time to time.  DSR I feel the same way.  To soft for casting or scope fishing.  Wanted to like the NRX 872 for power drop but was to stiff same goes for the 852s NRX. I think you'll like the 863.

Yup I started looking at the GLX 863 after I posted this and thinking the same...
