Newbie Rod Question

Featured Replies

I will try to be brief. Got into fishing 4 years ago, total newbie.

Had an Ugly Stik and Lightning Rod for the longest time, this year I grabbed a Shimano SLX medium light which I use 99% for soft plastics. I know it's not a super $$ rod but I do notice improved sensitivity.

My question is if you are throwing frogs, crankbaits, etc., does the sensitivity matter as much? I was going to use the Berkley for that but was curious what the advantage to a "better" rod would be in other fishing situations?

I guess what I am asking is if a rod upgrade is better across the board, or are certain types of fishing better suited to a better rod?

Frogs?  No sensitivity needed.

Crankbaits- you’ll notice the cover you’re hitting, the type of bottom you’re digging into, and if you’re fouled with grass on a more sensitive rod.

A ‘better’ rod will usually be lighter, more sensitive, and more responsive.  usually, but not always.

You don't need lots sensitivity to fish crankbaits. I fish mono on an Abu Black Max and I haven't had any problems feeling them.

I've used a fiberglass rod too without issue of feeling hits, though you don't feel other things as well. Not to say you can't feel it.

Lightning Rod isn't exactly a junk rod. It's a decent rod at a reasonable price. It's fairly sensitive too.

Nothing wrong with the SLX. The ML power is a finesse deal like a drop shot, shaky head ect.

It's going to be way to soft for a crankbait or frog.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

If you are throwing topwater and moving baits, sensitivity isn't all that important because you can still feel your bait stop (I don't think any rod is that "dead" feeling) or the blowup. What's most important is power and action and maybe weight, if you care (I don't mind heavier rods at all)
