Anyone else use their dropshot/finesse (Ned) setup to throw a tube?

Featured Replies

As a kayak fisherman, I don’t have the luxury of having a dedicated set up for every technique. With the exception of my swim bait rod, which I still throw A rigs on, everyone of my rod serves multiple purposes.

In the case of a tube, I unfortunately am forced to throw it on braid to leader. SC LTB 6’8” MLXF. 10 pound suffix 832 to 8 or 10 pound fluro.  I alternate between Ned, fluke and tube depending on conditions or what the fish are telling me. According to Zona, I am moving it too far and missing hook sets. What do you think?

I typically use the Secret Lures 3.25” stupid tube, 3/16.

I just use a classic tube head and have no issues running braid/leader on my 7’ MF spinning rig. I haven’t thrown tubes much since spring, but did get a 20”+ smallie on one the other day. That was after we saturated that spot with what had been working well previously

No reason that setup wouldn’t work.

I usually throw them on an old BPS Pro Qualifier 6’6” M/F, on 8lb braid with no leader - not too far off.

I like a lighter head on a tube for the most part though - 1/16 or 1/8, pretty much self setting with a light wire hook.

Of course you can use most rods for different techniques.  Rods have 3 major characteristics, length, power, and action, and unless one of these is way out whack for whatever technique you want to do, any rod will work.  Today's craze for "technique-specific" rods is designed to sell rods.

I pretty much always throw tubes (1/16 or 1/8 oz Owner Darter Heads) on a ML/F or ML/XF spinning rod.

I have used my M/F spinning rod at times and when I want a little more power to throw tubes through grass I have used my M-MH/XF casting rod.

I think you could throw tubes on just about a rod.  I currently use a medium fast action Avid spinning rod from St Croix.  I have also used my BFS set up.  Both worked.  I think a ML /XF would work great too.

Funny we have very similar setups. I also use a 3/16oz secret lures jig head w/ their tube. Weighed it a while back and came out to .41oz. I also have a SC 610MLXF rod dedicated to drop shotting but I'm also in a kayak and if it breaks off or anything I pretty can't be bothered to retie it until I get home. I started using a tube as a backup if / when that happens and in my experience it's worked out great and the action on that model lends itself well to a weedless tube.

TLDR: yes.
