Kayak wire management

Featured Replies

For those with kayaks and electronic wiring in the hull, I'm curious how you are managing the cabling. I had 3m adhesive cable management things in my hull to hold wiring up, and many of them failed. I believe it's from humid heat in the summer just wrecking them. I probably need to rip it all out and rewire the entire thing at this point, which sounds like a winter project, but currently my lights and trolling motor don't work so I'm down to pedal drive and fish finder only.

I'm ok with that setup honestly and it's certainly sufficient to fish with, but it sucks to have other features you can't use because cables fell down and then disconnected or shorted because the cable management failed. There are just wires laying in the hull at this point, which drives my OCD crazy.

Last note- I inherited this from prior owner so I can't speak to the quality of the initial job, but based on some solder work I saw it probably was going to have a short lifespan either way.

Thanks!

I hear you and feel your pain.... Sloppy wiring drives me crazy. It's a direct reflection of the quality of the job.

I've used D-Wings I purchased from WireCare. They seem to be holding well. One item that I go overboard on when using adhesive wire management products is to clean the surface twice with isopropol alcohol. I use the prep pads you can get at any pharmacy or Walmart.

On the packaging it states  "for indoor use only" but I've used them on my yak, so far so good. You might want to try them out

As an alternative, you might consider using 3M Dual Lock tape. They have an "ultra high bond" version. I used this to fasten an item to the bow of my yak and it's been holding fast for 6 or 7 years with no weaking at all.

I use 3M tie wrap mounts that sometimes do the same. I use contact adhesive to remount them. It works well.

One job I worked, we had to make sure those tie-mounts performed in damp environments. Drop of super-glue on the adhesive before securing was how we worked it.

I've somehow bulk ordered super glue, so I may try that for now as prepping with alcohol and adding super glue is very easy and all in my inventory. Then if it fails, I may go nuclear with some heavy duty adhesives, etc.

I think I'm going to deal with it this winter though. I can't keep my kayak in my shop, there are fish to catch and this job could become time consuming fast I think. I'm going to replace most of the wiring so I know it's done correctly, and then I'll try new 3m deals with super glue.

Thanks everyone!

You can get 3M “adhesion promoter” wipes at just about any auto body supplier. They’ll make the double side tape stick like it’s welded on.

Would auto zone have that? Or Amazon ? Not sure what an auto body supplier is, forgive my ignorance. I'm definitely interested in trying that..

Auto Zone MIGHT have it - they're more a general auto-parts place though.

Search Google for "Auto Body Supply near me"

Amazon does have them, Autozone may possibly.

Just search for 3M 4298

a zip tie is not the answer?

I dont run any motor wiriing inside, but it does bum me out that I have about a bass boat lengths worth of transducer and power cable running from my fish-finder and battery.

I have zero connections at the fish finder, but my battery has a connector that has not failed me yet.

I rolled it all up, and zipped it to a post inside my kayak hulls.

I have red/green lights up front, white lights on the stern, red "interior" lights, 360 light, sonar, volt meter and USB ports. All wiring runs inside the hull. I initially had the 3M clips and tried to do some wire management. I quickly realized that the clips don't really stay stuck, it wasn't really helping with wire management. Meaning it wasn't helping me identify the wires, it wasn't really keeping them organized, and nobody can see in there anyways.

I don't think I have much to zip tie to. We'll see. I'm gonna have to get deep in there to the extent I'm able.
