Acid Wrap - Theory vs Practical Application

As with most issues, the "acid wrap" is, IMO, highly overthought by us rodbuilders.  I have never seen any evidence that spiral wraps cast any better or worse than conventional.  That includes ALL the various designs, including the really easy Simple Spiral.  It works just as well as the more sophisticated and difficult to lay out designs.

The only true advantage to the spiral is the reduction in torquing while under load, and it follows that the advantage would be the most with the higher power rods.  I personally don't notice any torquing with my lower power conventional casting rods.

The Spoonplugger comment about how the very tip of the rod behaves is right on target, and failures in that area of the rod are common, but never caused by a fish or a cast.

The spiral wrap rods popularity comes and goes. I considered having a few custom rods built using the spiral guide train until trying out the Huddleston Swimbait rod with spiral guides. The rod performed good but my issue was laying the rod down with guides on the deck. Decided to pass for that reason.

WRB-2.0, Let's say you have a fish at the boat, going to lip him, net him, whatever. when you hold that rod in one hand and go for the fish, that rod is locked in the upright position, no matter where you choke up on the rod to reach the fish, it's not trying to spin in your hand, it's stable. A real advantage on longer rods, no need to highstick and break a rod when you can just shorten your reach.

The rod tends to guides down from the reel weight turning over, it’s like a spinning combo in that regard. Big swim bait rods 8+’ I used have a foregrip to hold in lieu of the rod blank when landing big bass. Never ever high stick a rod with a strong fish.

Good point.

I have 1 spiral wrapped rod.  The rod itself isn’t bad but getting it in and out of my rod locker is a pain.  One or more of the guides poke through the rod sock and get hung up on the rod slot.  Therefore, it mostly rides around in the boat down in the locker.

I don't see why a spiral wrap would be worse than conventional, or a spinning rod.  Sounds more like a rod sock problem.  With Simple Spiral all the guides are on the bottom exc the first and second.

You might not be able to visualize it but is there.  Spinning rods go in the port side box which doesn’t have dividers.
