Texas Rig Rod Comparison

Featured Replies

What’s your favorite 1/4-1/2oz texas rig rod for submerged grass? I’m kind of debating between the NRX+ 873C CRR and Steez AGS BC2 (which I own) as well as the P5 FMJ (don’t own). Have the Super Destroyer but that’s more of a dock/shallow cover rod for me. Sold my Xbites because it felt more like a one trick pony.

Been flipping/pitching a lot more this year so I grabbed a P5 Jungle Seven for 1/2-1.5oz situations and I’m loving it already. Trying to figure out which rod would complement it for the lighter applications in grass better.

I have the 873C CRR, it's one of two NRX+ models I own.

This is going to sound stupid, given they are $650 rods, but I'm not overly impressed with either.

Was the X Bites too light for your needs?

For me it depends on how thick the grass is but for the most part that's my sweet spot for the falcon heavy cover jig.

3/8-1/2oz, Xtasy 755c

1/4-3/8oz, Legend Tournament 7’3” HXF (middle class man’s CRR 873)

1/4-1/2 is a wide range for a rod, I’m more comfortable going down to 1/4 with the DRX755 than I am going 1/2 with the LTB. But both are great and they complement each other well

To me xbites shined in the 1/4-3/8oz range. Its such an accurate casting rod though. I just wanted something with a little more beef to it with a softer tip so that I could get those same pinpoint pitches

The NRX+ 873C is what I have been using for grass/swim jigs but I really like it for the free rig. After fishing it on multiple set ups, this rod just worked the best and checked all the boxes.  I can flip with it, cast a long ways when necessary, it has strong hook sets,  it pins fish well and has great slack line sensitivity for the free rig. It does kinda top out around 1/2oz but no big deal.

Another thing I like throwing on this rod, topwater.  I've thrown frogs, poppers, and spook style baits. All did well.

Never thought of throwing topwater especially not a frog with the 873 but I’ll definitely give the free rig a shot on it!

love using my windbuster for free rigs but up close in tight cover having a casting rod for free rigs is just so much more efficient

It was just an accident that I threw some topwater on it. I put a Pop Max on it after I broke off a jig and because so many fish around me were smacking the top of the water, I thought why not.

Another rod that was like this was the 883C BJR NRX+. I was at local pond and broke off. I had a frog with me and put it on. It worked great. Granted I was throwing a smaller frog on it but no issues. I went down a rabbit hole with this rod as well for topwater.

Depends on where you live and the cover you fish.

I sold my Xbites as it wasn’t up to pulling bass out of the junk on the Tennessee river. My 873 is the bottom contact Swiss Army knife I need. Bubba shot, Texas rig, jig, free rig. Slack line sensitivity is great and it keeps fish pinned.
