Teach your children well…

I love that old Crosby Stills Nash and Young song.  I put casting friendly combos for my grand kids.  A little shorter moderate action rods.  I fitted them with 12 and 14 mono because it comes off the spool nicely.  All three 12, 12 and 15 yoa are casting really well.  Good distance and accuracy.  I’m so proud of them.  But the best lesson taught was how to remove a back lash.   Yup, you back lash, you remove it.  I showed them the tried and true method where you lock down the drag and reel against firm thumb pressure to press the loops the opposite way and gently pull and repeat as needed.  So I hear, Papa I gotta back lash.  No wait. Papa I got it out.  I love that as much as, Papa, I’m hooked in the weeds. No it’s a fish!  Teach your children/ grand children well.

I'll be 49 at the end of the year.

I'm guessing my middle son will make me a grandpa in about 5 years.

If it's his older sister or younger brother something went wrong!!! LOL

Not gonna lie, I'm getting a little excited.  :)

My parents didn’t fish or hunt.

but they insisted I learned in school.  And learned manners.

fishing and hunting?  Oh, I’ll take it from here.

That's awesome.

I'm teaching my boy to use a baitcaster, and he's only 6. I don't force it, but he'll ask to try mine, so I'll adjust it for him and he does pretty good.

Been teaching my 4 year old this past summer. Every time she sees her rod she always asks to cast it. I throw a little practice plug on there and shell toss it out into the yard and reel it in slow and pretend she catches a fish. Every now and then I'll run and grab the plug and she fights me in like a fish.

Got her on a bunch of blue gill and some catfish this summer and she loved it. Got about 30-45 minutes of attention span but she insists on doing everything herself including getting the worms out and picking which one she wants to use. Still havent let her bait the hook yet, maybe next year.

For two years, I built and ran a fishing booth at our elementary school's annual fall fair. The kids could catch an old tire, a dink, or a musky. The tire wouldn't fight, the dink would barely fight, and musky would fight like pit bull. The kids loved it.

My boy pretends he's a fish, sometimes a bass, sometimes a big old catfish. I'll pretend to cast a lure out, then I'll fight him and get him reeled in. Unless he crawls around the table, then he's in a brush pile and can break me off or spit the hook.

If I get him in, I have to use the pretend billy club to subdue him in order to get the hook out.
