Knockers

Featured Replies

No, not THAT kind.

I'm talking about rattles, knockers, whatever you want to call them.

What's your opinion on them?

I've said "I'm no expert" on here about 100 times, but they just don't seem natural to me.

I know fish eat all kinds of not natural baits, but it just seems these could hinder more than help.

I can understand really dirty water. But clear water? Water that gets a lot of pressure?

IDK, I might start looking for silent versions.

Thoughts?

I prefer silent cranks most of the time. A lot of the older cranks, which I own, have a subtle rattle. I ike throwing the old crankbaits, there are times where bass choke on them.

I throw about 50/50 - rattles when they’re actively chasing, balsa when they’re not.

I fish a lot of clear water and I've done well with both silent and rattling cranks. I will say that the silent ones have worked better in shallower water (1-10ft.). Deeper than that, I normally throw ones with rattles. That's mostly because most of my deeper diving cranks have rattles.

Yeah that sorta makes sense.

The other evening I went out with one rod and one lure. A popper.

It was supposed to be a quick outing as it was a lake we pass visiting some friends.

There’s a large area with a ton of riprap. I was 99% sure I’d catch either a brown or green bass. I’ve caught them both here.

The sun was completely down, just a slight breeze. I worked that popper parallel to the riprap for probably 400 yards.

One small swirl.

I’m still baffled and thought maybe the knocker made an impact because this lake gets a ton of pressure.

I try to be silent baits now and since every lake and pond and river is so pressured, I notice that "most" of the time I seem to do better with smaller and silent baits...Especially cranksbaits and Lipless crankbaits. A silent lipless crankbait is awesome......I use one knockers to find em and after they stop hitting, go to silent although they make a great search bait as well.

I seem to never to as well with rattles except maybe in stained water on Carolina rigs with a bead.
