Chonarch Ci4 noise during casting

Featured Replies

I have 2 (Circa 2014?) Chronarchs (one std, one HG) on med/heave moderate action rods that I use for Crankbaits and Chatterbaits.  They don't see a ton of use and they are regularly serviced. Also, I've upgraded the spool bearings a few years ago.  Issue is that one of them started buzzing during a cast. I checked all the breaks (I have 2 turned on) to make sure nothing was stuck.

Any ideas?

If they are fully cleaned and the bearings are in good shape (check both of those items first) then I’d be looking for something throwing the spool off balance.  Either a dent/bend in the frame or something sticking in a bad place.  A bent spool axle could do it also.

That generation uses red brake arms that'll get zippy sounding unless you periodically oil the brass brake pipe found in the removable side plate. Use the Bantam oil that came with the reel. Follow the instructions on the sheet found in the original packing. This will probably solve your issue.

Slide off all 4 brakes and try casting to determine it’s not the brake drum.

Nice Reels now 12 years use. Suggest having a pro tech like Mike at DVL clean and tune your reels.

You say you upgraded bearings. If you’re running ceramic hybrids you can expect some sound from them. Otherwise, as previously mentioned oil the brake drum and be sure bearings are clean and in good condition. A bent or damaged spool would affect freespool. I wouldn’t spend much time chasing that at this point.

Great suggestions everyone, thank you.  Considering how old these are they do perform extremely well and I'd hate to replace them I have a few Mets and Bantams and they've got nothing on these.

Cant see that there's a bent spool shaft, likely a bit of lube on the brake drum will do  it as this is something ive never done.
