Ultralight Reel?

Featured Replies

I've been looking for really 2 years now for the perfect ultralight spinning or underspin reel. I've went threw 3 reels last year. The higher end quantum ultralight spinning reel, the pflueger trion and a daiwa regal underspin. None them are worth anything after less then a year of fishing. My buddies son has the pflueger president ultralight spinning reel, it felt nice on the few casts i made with it. But I was wondering if anyone knew of any other high end reels I could use or try. I will be matching it up on a 5' st. croix triumph UL.

you must really be using those reels a lot or something  :-? i have a pflueger trion and love it.

I use a Symetre 750.

or try an Okuma Alumina or Epixor in the 10 or 15 size

CK14,  Out of all the reels I mentioned the trion did last the longest. I could probally clean it up and still use it but I wasn't all the way satisfied with it. The quantom i ended up buying from a fake quantum dealer, I guy opend up a tackle shop around here and was very shady. He fed me some real bs when i tried to order a quantum energy spinning reel from him. His best out of the four or five lies he told me was. You can only buy that reel from bps and its only sold on a combo, so he was waiting to have bps cut the reel off the combo just for him. I got lucky and got my money back when it was all said and done. but the ultralight reel was a peice of junk. I know he serviced reels and I wouldn't doubt it if he messed with it, it was missing a washer when my buddy took apart for me. but anyway i would hate to buy another one just like it and end up not being able to stand fishing with it after a year of use. And has anyone tried the BPS MicroLite Surpreme Spinning Reel. I only was able to read the two reviews they has on basspro.com about it.

Ive caught little tarpon and big Snook on my Quantum Inshore Catalyst 10pti.  It never missed a beat and is still tight.  Going on 3 years of use too.  A great article in In-Fisherman back in the days the Lindners were there, suggested not using true ultralight reels for better casting performance.  If your tearing them up maybe you should consider a 1500/2000 size reel.  Quantums Boca 20pti is bombproof at a whopping 12oz.!

Another vote for the Catalyst PT. In my opinion, this reel is the best value in the Quantum line of spinning reels. The Energy PT is 40 bucks more, and doesn't feel like 40 bucks better. I have both.

The Shimano Symetre is a good choice, at 20 bucks less than the Catalyst. I like the Catalyst better than the Symetry. I have of couple of those also, and I think the Catalyst is worth the extra $20.

Do yourself a big favor and don't get one of those dinky little 10 size reels. I know they're lighter, but what you trade for the reduced weight is reduced casting distance and a lot more line problems. Been there, done that, cussed "em a blue streak.

Cheers,

GK

I have two catalyst 10 and a symetre 750. All holding up well for over two yrs. The symetre 750 would get my vote.

Thanks for all the ideas but I should have mention that I use mostly size 10 spinning reels to bass fish, both my energy's are size 10s and my catalyst a 20. a size 30 to me just feels to big and heavy. I would consider maybe going with a size 10 catalyst and use it but I would perfer the true ultralight spinning reel. I fish alot of trout here in the mountains when there is nothing else to do and I enjoy the fight any fish gives. I loose some bass cause I don't use 15 lb test on a 7' flipping stick. But every fish that has have broke off has always been my fault in some way or another. I love catching big bass but catching a 8lb bass on 6lb test makes it that much better to me. If anyone has had any experience with the bps micro lite ( the one that has 8 bearing ) or any other trure ultralight spinning reel that has done them well, let me know. thanks again for trying to help everyone.

Symetre 750.  Has a great drag and decent line capacity.  I paired mine with a 6'6 Fenwick Eagle GT L action and I can cast 1/16 and 1/32 oz. trout lures a mile.

I wholeheartedly agree: Shimano Symetre 750 Front-Drag (SSY750FI)

I don't know exactly  what you mean by true ultralight spinning reel but the symetre 750 weighs only 6.9 oz. Thats less than the browning ultralight offered at BPS and only .4 oz more than the BPS reel. The weight difference is minimal when one takes into account the superior performance I believe you will get from the shimano.

If you really want something ridiculously small you can look into an Okuma Alumina AL-10. It weighs only 5.8 oz but will also leave you with shorter casts and more tangling problems without a change in the fight you enjoy.
