Has anyone using speed clips experienced knot chaffing and breakoffs, and is there a better clip for heavier baits like glides that doesn’t have this issue?

Featured Replies

I have been using speed clips on my Swimbait setup that I also throw A Rigs on. At first they worked well, but there are two points of entry to slide your line tie over. The top (horizontal) one is far easier to slide onto for some reason than the diagonal one on bottom, and so I started using that. However, my knot broke sending my Chad Shad into orbit.

When I retied I discovered when the knot slides down it rubs the entry point of the clip. Even 20 lb fluoro will not withstand this for long.

Luckily I was working a weedline and it landed on the bank. It broke the tail but fixable. Next time I’m afraid I won’t be so lucky and it’ll end up on the bottom of the river.

My question is, do they make any heavy duty snaps that don’t have this issue and are equally easy to use without impacting the action?E8041844-192C-4142-BDC1-83D1F27D2A40.jpeg.bebd17253d25f8e9ea24c7f726ec99ca.jpeg

I use Decoy Egg Snaps on all my big hard baits. I put them on every bait and never remove them. Never had a problem with them.

Yes. I clip them on every new big hard bait and tie to it when I use that bait. I never take them off/on, which weakens them. I don't use them for quick bait changes. I use them for the improved movement while working the bait. I retie my SDJ knots often and in seconds. Hope that makes sense.

And you don’t find it difficult getting a 7” resin (or bigger) bait with size 2 trebles through your knot loop?? How much could sliding your bait onto the clip really weaken it? Been doing it for years never had one fail.

How is that any different than a direct tie or tying to a split ring?  For large swimbaits and glide baits, you should be using both depending on the time of year and action needed from the bait.  Direct tie imparts less action from the bait.  There is a time and place for each.  I choose snaps over split rings.

No I did not, but lucky for you.

@ohioguy25 You don't pass your bait through a SDJ knot.

Every time you flex metal it weakens.

When I was fishing big swim baits tied directly to lure eye using SD Jam knot.

When I did use a snap Berkley Cross Loc snaps work good, never had a snap open.

Today I use Owner Hyper weld snaps simple light weight and very strong.

according to animated knots, the san diego jam knot does not have a loop that passes over the bait. I have no issues with Tactical wakes, Wad3s or other semi bulky baits and tying it.

SD jam knot you use the lures weight to tie the knot, couldn’t be easier!

How strong is it compared to Palomar?

I have used that knot on a jig that got snagged and stopped a 21PHX dead in 6mph current on the St Lawrence.  It's very strong.

P-Line makes a great heavy paper-clip style clip.

You should use the 45 degree part of the clip to put on your bait. And your knot should go on the bottom of your pic.

100% use the SDJ Knot mentioned above, preferably doubled. It shouldn't slide around at all anyway.
