Black Friday Swimbait rod up to 5oz

Featured Replies

Looking for a deal on swimbait rod that can throw bigger swimbaits and possibly go to shore/inlet fishing on vacations.  I'm on a budget of $200 and below.  Looking at the Dobyns 795, Shimano SLX A, and Daiwa Tatula 7'9 heavy.  I've read good things about IROD but never had one or held one. Thanks for any suggestions on making it a good christmas and even better spring with swimbait/glidebaits action.

If you're really planning to throw 5oz baits I think the Fury 795 will be overloaded, probably better off with an 8oz rod like the 806.

I have the Tatula and had the Fury.  Tatula is very nice but reel seat might be weird for you

Just FYI Leviathan Omegas are $50 off right now.  I know that blows your budget and then some, but just throwing it out there.  That is one of the two most recommended rod brands in the swimbait world. For 5oz glides I would look at the XH model.

806 over the 795 if you want to throw any soft baits in the 2oz+ range, at least for me. treble hooks, no problems, but the 795 was a little soft for monster hooked baits on long casts

i love my irod(s) for swimbait fishing. the 764 sniper has been in my hand a lot this season. i find it loads nicely through 5oz, which is where my baits top out right now. braid to leader friendly guides

I've also been using the dobyns mbr836 (bull shad rod) a lot. i found mine on a prime deal for around $150. loads nicely, faster tip than the irod for my soft baits but still moderate enough that I'm comfortable throwing tactical wakes or my line-thru gills, large guides for those who run braid to leader. my 5oz lures are right in the sweet spot for this rod, so i have faith that i could go up to 7oz without issue.

5oz would be few and far between and mainly at the coat.  I mostly looking to throw 2-4oz swimbaits and glidebaits.

I already have a Tatula elite cranking stick don't mind the reel seat. Shouldn't be a problem

They 79 Tatula swimbait rod (last made for the 2024 year). Has a completely different seat than any other Tatula rod.

5 oz go with 3 to 10 oz rod rating.

Tom

If it were me I'd take a look at a Dobyns Fury or Champion 806 HSB. If you're still looking the fury is in stock at copperstate and 25% off which puts it well below 200. If you want to setup up to the champ xp that one looks like it's sold out there, but dobyns has a 20% off code on their site right now which gets the price for that one down to 231. If you are going to be using it a lot it might be worth the extra money for the champion xp. Alternatively it looks like St Croix retired the victory VTC710XXHF and has it on their factory store site for $192...only bummer is it's retired so if you broke it and really liked it you would be looking at replacing it w/ something else. Still a good deal though and they also have a lower price one that goes up to 8lb in the Bass X line but if it were me I'd get the Victory...

anyone have thoughts on IROD Genesis 3 vs Omega's. Leviathian is about 100 more expensive, is it worth it for 3-5oz swim/glidebaits?

The Dobyns FR 806HSB is a solid choice at $159 and rated for 2-8 oz. It claims to be a "Fast" action rod, but IMHO it more of a mod to mod-fast type action which is most suited for good sized swimbaits with treble hooks. I have mine paired with a Daiwa Tatula 200 for exactly that purpose.

I don't think I would throw an actual 8 oz swimbait with the FR 806HSB, but up to 6 oz would be in it's true wheel house IMHO.

I heard or read one time to add the stated weight range together and then divide by two. I use that as a max weight. Do I go over that? Yep, all the time, but I try not to throw baits at the top end of the range of the rod…

Thinking the 806 with a tatula 200 should come in around $360- $440 range which is about about I had budgeted for a heavy bait setup. Would this hold up some coastal fishing in Murrells Inlet, Folly Beach, and random SC coastal inlet fishing? Not sure I can have it both ways but wishing for a swimbait rod in highland reservoirs of WNC/ East TN and some inlet fishing a few times a year.
