drop shots and loop knots

Does anyone tie a loop knot for a drop shot set up? What knot?

Last year someone mentioned using a fly as a drop shot bait. I think it was @Bluebasser86. I have been thinking about this as I have been tying lots bucktail jigs. I don't fly fish but could tie some drop shot flies. Flies are so light I was thinking they might move better on some type of loop.

Does anyone tie a dropper loop?

I started practicing the dropper loop this weekend. A little bit like tying a Palomar. The most difficult part is sinching the knot, it requires a third hand, and adjusting the size of the loop. After about 4 or 5 tries I pretty much had it down, so not that difficult. Like most knots, you practice, and come up with a technique that works. Going to try this out this season.

I use the dropper loop as my standard drop shot knot, but no loop remains, it's all pulled up tight.

Is that by design? Or does the knot slip?

The dropper-loop is designed to tighten up like that.

By design, I want the hook up flush without a loop remaining. I haven't tried leaving a loop so I don't know if it slips.

I use it all the time in saltwater applications. Filet-O-Fish.jpg

The jig is on the dropper loop and the bank sinker is on the bottom using a surgeons loop. I use it for vertical drift jigging. The loop allows for more movement in the current making the bucktail flare. For that reason I don't want the dropper loop cinching down taking away the action.

The bucktail jig in the pic I posted is a 1/4 oz so you can use your bucktails for double duty )

You want the hook to be static with a DS. If you use a standard dropper loop without twisting the line to createa solid standoff, the lure wil just sit slack without current.

The best DS knot to tie is one that i dont even know teh name of. Its essentially a dropper loop without the loop. You just cinch the knot onto the eye of the hook. Once right the hook cant turn or roll and will always be in the correct position. That kind of knot also allows makes it really easy to get exactly the amount of tag you want without having to run through the eye, like a palomar or uni DS.

@GetFishorDieTryin thank you for that video, that is pretty awesome.

However I don't agree that a hooks on a drop shot rig always needs to be static. I don't think there are many rules set in stone with regards to bass fishing. Mother nature is fickle. I think we should keep trying new things. Who knows what could happen.
